Alexandra Heller-Nicholas The Blue Lenses To leave a film feeling as utterly dejected, defeated and sullied shouldn't be so rapturous an experience, and yet, somehow, that is precisely what Papadimitropoulos with Suntan manages to do. Aug 25, 2018 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times See it, from between your fingers. But only if you're not in the throes of a midlife crisis. Rated: 3/5 Jun 14, 2017 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine The solace that we can all take from Suntan, however, is that this is an extraordinary, exuberant, and inventive piece of cinema, and a finely crafted character sketch and essay in dark moral comedy. May 5, 2017 Full Review Michael J. Casey Michael J. Cinema A droll stroll through an island vacation with a rude awakening. Rated: 3/5 Jun 13, 2021 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Suntan suggests association with the superficial but instead deals with the roiling turmoil of a stunted masculine psyche unleashed and out of control. Rated: 3.5/5 Oct 5, 2019 Full Review John Bleasdale CineVue The comedy is sniggery and the tragedy, at last, exasperated - the bland Suntan of the title hiding the carcinogens stirring under the skin. Audience Member Basically to some it up without giving too much away, this is another movie that emphasizes on the ignorance of humanity (particularly the younger generation) and how most of us do things that we think are harmless fun at the time, but can have a greater impact on someone, say with a serious mental illness. This movie does an excellent job at getting its point across, and I myself, having gone through similar emotional experiences, completely understand the main characters struggle. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful snapshots of the island. Other than that, it's groundhog day for a creepy doctor who we never get to know enough about to feel sympathy for. Completely dragged and leaves you waiting for the payoff of watching the endless boredom and is completely anticlimactic. College student filmmaking Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a really well directed film. Throughout the running of it you get the feeling that something is off, not quite right. Its nicely handled. Respect to the director. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched this last year and it's one of those films that stays with you. One of my top indie film recommendations. It's the kind of film Thomas Mann would make, reminded me of Tonio Kröger and Death in Venice, the kind of discomfort of looking on from the fringes. I think it definitely resonates with you if you are older. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Be warned: this movie culminates in a rape scene. Can't believe that Netflix streams this kind of movie. Glad to see that they are pulling it. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member It's the perfect setting for a character study of that kind. Works quite well, despite its weaknesses.
