Dennis Harvey Variety [A] hapless, laughless movie. Sep 15, 2008 Full Review Tim Cogshell Boxoffice Magazine The movie is about a surfer dude (sans comma), who is an analog dude trying to fit into a digital world, which is like trying to get a square peg into a Calabi-Yau Manifold, which is to say it probably won't work, and neither does this movie. Rated: 2/5 Sep 15, 2008 Full Review Neely Tucker Washington Post You can stick around for the only funny line, which involves a breakfast burrito, but the smart surfer would head for the hills and Willie's goat ranch. Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Kevin Carr 7M Pictures The problem that Surfer, Dude faces is that in its attempt to be a stoner comedy, it forgot to add the comedy elements. Rated: 1.5/5 Mar 5, 2009 Full Review Peter Canavese Groucho Reviews A celebration of unrealistic lifestyles, which makes it exactly the wrong film for our times. [Blu-ray] Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 28, 2008 Full Review Ben Lyons At the Movies The film looks more like a collection of home movies as opposed to a professional piece of cinema. warren j Very accurate in it’s depiction of Surfer Dude ethos on the West Coast, Great to look at and before it’s time in pointing out the destructive elements of modern mainstream reality TV culture. Enjoyable, feel good and great performances all round. This films reputation will grow in time, Cool!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review t n Matthew McConaughey obviously produced this so that he could spend an hour or two without a shirt on trying to look sexy. Choosing Woody Harrelson to be in the movie was obviously an attempt to make himself look even better and he must have homophobic Tendencies towards Woody because they enjoy having conversations with their face 2 inches apart from each other. So no Matthew you're not all that and next time you want to make a movie try and produce something with actual content honestly this movie reminds me of some ugly guy standing in front of a mirror for 3 hours pretending to be sexy a big pass on this movie this movie is not just bad it is completely vile Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/24/22 Full Review Audience Member Is it bad, stoner-surfer genius, or avant-garde? I didn't hate it, but it really is borderline unwatchable. Having said that, you do get an awful lot of McConaughey for your money. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was an amazing ride. Harrelson and McConaughey portray their characters beautifully and improvise off one another. I laughed, cried and gasped at this movie. The occasional 'X days without waves' caught my attention and this was a groundbreaking aspect of the movie. The thing that made me give it 5 stars was large; it was McConaughey's ass. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Why did the waves stop? What made the waves suddenly begin again? Why didn't that cocky surfer who hit Steve Addington get his ass whopped? It was a "train wreck" movie. I wanted to stop watching, but I just couldn't. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Like... legit the best movie. Don't overthink it. It's not some ultra mega introspective into anything but a dude just being a dude.
