He took a year off from VCU to study theater in Oxford before returning to complete his BFA in theater. After graduation, Knighton spent five years in New York, working in theater while still taking time to play supporting roles on shows like "Ed" (NBC, 2000-04), and "Law & Order" (NBC, 1990-2010). In 2005, Knighton landed his first series regular role, the lead character in "Life on a Stick" (Fox, 2005), a comedy about a high school graduate who takes time off to consider his future while working in the food court at the local mall. The series was cancelled before the end of its first season, but Knighton was on his way.
