      Critics Consensus

Beyond The Pale Door lies an intriguing western/horror hybrid -- albeit one that struggles to fashion its halves into a compelling whole.

Mark W Enjoyable. No real plot, but a fun way to spend an afternoon. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/26/20 Full Review B J This was quite enjoyable a really original concept. With a bigger budget could be better. Well I liked it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Jeffrey P I enjoy westerns and horror films but horror westerns just don't do anything for me. Too much fear and crying, and the replacement of western grit with horror mystery just... does not compute. Does not compute! DOES NOT COMPUTE! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Hugo S After a failed train robbery, a gang of outlaws must survive the night in a ghost town inhabited by a coven of witches. "The Pale Door" is a tedious horror western with no substance to offer beyond its entertaining second half: a fight between witches and cowboys. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/23/23 Full Review Brad P The Pale Door is a wildly entertaining combination of great practical effects and an outstanding cast that is sure to please any horror fan. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Dara L What an awful movie. It makes you really appreciate good movies because it shows you how terrible movies can be. I wanted to rip my eyes out and my ears off my face the entire time. Sometimes I wonder with my movie picks, am I a masochist? The accents were all over the place, one of the characters attempted a cajun accent, I think, but he came out sounding like a medieval grape nut. you can tell they spent their entire budget on the single fight scene involving all the witches. The other half of their budget went to special effects like making a man bust into a bunch of crows. Should've spent more money on the writing instead. Becca James Chicago Reader The Pale Door is a raucous ride through a different type of wild west. Sep 16, 2020 Full Review Tomris Laffly RogerEbert.com Koontz's command over the material is so absent that it is at times hard to distinguish his film from a spoofy Western-themed fair where a group of friends play dress-up for amusement. Rated: 1/4 Aug 21, 2020 Full Review Matthew Monagle Austin Chronicle As a B-horror movie, The Pale Door holds its own. As a Western, however, the film struggles. Rated: 3/5 Aug 20, 2020 Full Review Steven Warner In Review Online The whole enterprise would be amusing if it weren't so pathetically miscalculated...There's simply nothing funny or horrific to be found here. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Witney Seibold Critically Acclaimed Podcast Half revisionist western, half lurid witch thriller, 'The Pale Door' settles in a space where it is disappointingly neither. Mar 30, 2021 Full Review Jonathan DeHaan Nightmare on Film Street I want to live a world with more western horror movies and I want them all to be as fun and freaky as The Pale Door. Yee-haw!
