Evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) lusts for the beautiful wife of a London barber (Johnny Depp) and transports him to Australia for a crime he did not commit. Returning after 15 years and calling himself Sweeney Todd, the now-mad man vows revenge, applying his razor to unlucky customers and shuttling the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who uses them in her meat-pie shop. Though many fall to his blade, he will not be satisfied until he slits Turpin's throat.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Full of pith and Grand Guignol grossness, this macabre musical is perfectly helmed and highly entertaining. Tim Burton masterfully stages the musical in a way that will make you think he has done this many times before.

Namrata Joshi Outlook It keeps getting bloodier by the scene, yet remains curiously engaging. Rated: 2/4 Jan 29, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator Without any warmth and humor at all, how are you meant to care? I'm not saying you always have to care about someone in a movie - not at all - but here the story is so ludicrous that, unless you can, why bother? Aug 23, 2018 Full Review Joshua Rothkopf Time Out This is grand-scale studio-work at its most beguiling. Rated: 3/5 Nov 17, 2011 Full Review Alan Mount Starburst Tim Burton’s masterful rendition of composer Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical could well be the director’s best work. Rated: 5/5 Jul 25, 2025 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal An entertaining piece of graphic poetry. When the blood starts to spurt, sputter and spit, it’s in just the right shade — not so thick and crimson as to be off-putting but not so fake and thin as to have no impact. Rated: 3.5/4 Nov 9, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy A big, bold musical that functions as an upscale slasher film: It’s bloody but also bloody good. VITALII H I decided to watch it for two reasons. One of them being Helena Bonham Carter of course. The second reason is it's dark atmosphere and spooky style which is so on theme for Halloween. Never saw nor heard about this play. Must admit, there are a lot of bloody scenes which I usually don't like in the movies. But thankfully the blood looked fake so it didn't disgust me at all. The movie is camp, total English bustling and theatrical singing. I don't necessarily love musicals but this one caught my attention because of the Harry Potter cast reunion alone. - The production, costumes, sets were great. I really liked it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/25 Full Review Dylan F One of the very few musicals I not only tolerate but thoroughly enjoy. A bit out there in it's style, but that's part of it's charm. It is honestly one of my favorite movies. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/23/25 Full Review Harold C. A gorgeously bleak and emotionally charged musical, blending Burton’s gothic visuals with Sondheim’s music in a way that’s both horrific and beautiful. Depp’s performance is iconic, the songs soar, and even when the pacing shows its stage roots, the story’s dark turns and final act leave a lasting impact. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/21/25 Full Review Brad 💀🙏it freaked me out but I love the movie 😂 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/20/25 Full Review Samantha L I love horror, musicals AND Johnny Depp’s way of melding into characters. It’s not as impactful as the musical on stage but in general it’s like that for MOST play to film conversions. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/18/25 Full Review alan g Definitely not has good as the play. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/11/25 Full Review Read all reviews
