mark s As a historical relic it might have some value, but as a movie, it fails on every level possible. For starters, the 'soundtrack' is nothing more than a snare drum and cymbal. Twice, it stopped completely for 5-10 minutes at a stretch, then would start up again. The screen text explaining the conversations was so consistently muddled and badly written that it was impossible to understand the actual point. An example is "Her certainly doesn't realise its value. Lets buy it back from him". Painful. Oddly, its subtitle is "A history of the KKK", and short of roughly 45 seconds of stock KKK footage -from another movie- of six guys riding with torches through a field that was randomly spliced in... that was everything related to the Klan. Yowza bad! 1/2 star for the movie based on its merits and an additional 1/2 star because this white boy doesn't want to be accused of being a racist. One full star IS generous. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The soundtrack by Max Roach is surprisingly expressive. I'm blown away by his ability to keep me involved in the film with only his drum set. It maybe shouldn't work, but it does, beautifully. (The movie is good too.) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A black man inherits some land that unbeknownst to him has valuable oil deposits. A half-black/half-white man who passes for white and despises black people teams up with racists to intimidate him into selling his land. Like many of Oscar Micheaux's silent films, there's not a very clear narrative flow to it, but it contains rich and powerful imagery. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review Audience Member There's a chunk of this film missing, centered around a scene of Klansmen getting beat down by a brick-wielding "negro". Going to venture a guess it was Abraham. Might've added half a star for that scene alone. The Max Roach soundtrack is a nice touch to this otherwise silent film.
