Andrea Thompson Chicago Reader When the terror proves to be all too real, Sophie and her crew fight back in the face of alt-right rallies and despair, and T Blockers forces us to question our ability to recognize monsters and oppressive regimes alike. Sep 22, 2023 Full Review Drew Gregory Autostraddle The character dynamics are low-key and honest in a way we rarely get in trans cinema of any genre. Aug 18, 2023 Full Review Alexandra Heller-Nicholas AWFJ.org With T Blockers Mackay continues to consolidate her position as the future face of the horror genre Aug 17, 2023 Full Review Ygraine Hackett-Cantabrana Moving Pictures Film Club a thoroughly enjoyable B-movie sci-fi which proves that Alice Maio Mackay is a pioneer of queer independent horror. Rated: 4/5 Jul 9, 2024 Full Review Bee Delores B-Sides & Badlands T Blockers is nothing if not unapologetic. But so is Alice Maio Mackay, a real force of nature. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 3, 2024 Full Review Terry Sherwood Film Threat All in all, though, the film is gloriously well done with fast edits, moving field of vision, strong use of foreground and background in a frame, and good closeups with a cast that delivers the lines like they were not lines. James W This was written and directed by a 19-year-old, so on that level it's a hell of an achievement. There are some decent sequences, it made me laugh a couple of times and she gets great performances out of most of the cast. Unfortunately, the script is a mess. The pacing is way off (the film is half over before our heroine even discovers her town has been infested with mind-robbing parasites) and the alternating between low-energy slice-of-life comedy and camp B-movie doesn't really work. It name-drops John Waters but doesn't have his kind of punky, deranged energy, which isn't a criticism in of itself, but a drop of that might have carried the low-budget monster movie shenanigans a bit. Technically it's all over the place too; some scenes look great, while others are so underlit they're practically indecipherable, and the audio mixing for the dialogue is awful but there are some great tunes on the soundtrack. The gushing professional reviews are baffling, but this is still impressive from such a young writer/director, and she obviously has talent. Give her 5-10 years and we could get something really special from her. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/24/24 Full Review Dutch C Amazing film. Saw it at a local Boston queer film festival. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review The Fan A An absolute delight. Walked away from this feeling the joy I felt after seeing John Waters for the first time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/30/24 Full Review Dogon B Scary, brilliant film! Looks like a bunch of right wing Neo-Nazis are trying to downgrade this awesome movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/24/24 Full Review prawnda s sometimes, cute and stupid *are* enough. anyways, it's a decent film in some ways, but it kind of feels like this extended silent/ambient sequence near the climax was just a way to cover for them running out of script. it would be a pretty good watch if they finished it :/ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/11/24 Full Review Read all reviews
