Though one could be fooled by its marketing into thinking the movie is a history doc, the film is moreso a behind-the-scenes look at a series of studio performances from the assembled artists, with historical vignettes on New Orleans interspersed.

It's partly a promotional vehicle showing the recording of the songs on the movie's soundtrack and partly a history of New Orleans music culture. The documentary has got some editing issues, but the diverse performances in the studio are joyous to watch.

Unpacking New Orleans music and musical history is a might task, this documentary does it justice in an informative, emotional and just way. The music and interviews captured are important historical parts of American history.

The music alone is reason to see Take Me to the River. NO R&B is the common thread to all the songs, both new and old, which are shown being recorded in "live take" studio sessions. The younger and elder artists work together and discuss how they maintain the feeling of New Orleans music as the world changes. Meanwhile, the narrator discusses the history of NO music and how it forms the basis of American music. Fantastic and positive experience.
