Geoff Andrew Sight & Sound What makes Nichols' film so satisfying, at least until the melodrama of the final act, is the deftness of the characterisations and the constant sense that things are probably considerably more complex than they're perceived. Aug 29, 2017 Full Review David Thomson The New Republic In my estimate, this unique and frequently arresting film suffers from the monotony of the lead players' affect, and from the film's urge to have its gloomy cake and eat it. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review Justin Chang Variety A hallucinatory thriller anchored by a deeply resonant sense of unease. Jan 4, 2012 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity Taut masterpiece of prescient dread... Day clouds are pretty and plain, puffs of white, expanse of common blue. Nichols finds telling details everywhere in the countryside, in mood akin to Eggleston but far from Shore. Rated: 10/10 Jul 4, 2024 Full Review Michael Leader Den of Geek Whether it achieves such standing or not, Take Shelter succeeds in something quite impressive. Rated: 4/5 May 8, 2024 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh A captivating experience, thanks in large part to Michael Shannon's powerful performance, with the payoff only elevating the journey into something even more satisfying. Lance C Well made, but if you want a movie that leaves you completely unsatisfied at the end with no explanation or closure, I recommend this. Actually I don't recommend this. Waste of talent, and my time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Lori D This movie was full of probablility. Eery, foreboding and absolutely well done. Those that think otherwise, may not have appreciated the symbolism, and the true love of a couple. .Mental health twist, however for those of you that are Intuitive, perhaps will like this movie a bit more than one to whom is not. Suspenseful, in a calm, non chaotic way. Thumbs up to these actors, especially, hubby and wife, depicted this content beautifully. Nay sayers, I vehemantly disagree. Is a worth while watch! Lori Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Tony L The ambiguous final scene, which can be interpreted at least three ways and probably more, ruined this film for me. I felt like I had just wasted two hours on the edge of my seat watching a psychological thriller build to a climax -- without a climax! I've never liked books with a let-the-reader-decide ending, and movies are even worse. The creators want everyone buzzing about what the ending means, and I'll tell you: it means you wasted your time on a copout. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/24/24 Full Review Noel L If you like endless simmering tension with an ongoing sense of dark foreboding as a slow-motion train wreck happens, all without much of a purpose, this is the movie for you. I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited for the movie to make sense of it all, but for all practical purposes, there wasn’t a point to make, or at least the point it ostensibly made was a cop-out. I rated it as high as I did because the acting and production quality were outstanding, and it was thought-provoking insofar as it allowed the audience to experience the self-doubt of a person wondering if he’s descending into paranoid schizophrenia. However, it did so in a way that felt unrealistic and thoroughly unsatisfying at the end of the movie. And by the time I got to that point, I wished that I had spent those two hours doing my taxes. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/16/24 Full Review Joseph P This movie has no plot. On its surface, it seems to be a disaster movie, but really ends up being about one man's struggle with mental illness. The main character goes out of his way to lie to and ignore his loved ones. I can't imagine a marriage where I would hide so much from my wife. Some call this movie a "slow burn", but that would imply there's any fire to it all. I recommend taking a nap instead of watching this movie; your dreams might be more interesting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Mo Q Slow burn, yet worth the wait. Shannon shines as a troubled midwestern construction worker haunted by visions of catastrophic storm with oil raining down on earth threatening to harm his family. Is the storm real or a hallucination? This movie does a mesmerizing job of blurring the lines between instincts and delusions that leaves viewers questioning whether the protagonist is a prophet receiving divine revelation or mentally ill. A wonderful, low budgtet yet ambitious commentary that seamlessly weaves together internal and external stressors that are weighing down rural america- financial instability, recession, unemployment, bankruptcy, health insecurity. Throw in the the burden of disability (mental or physical) and the ever growing threat of climate change- its no wonder why the protagonist eventually breaks down. Not sure I agree with the management of mental illness portrayed in this movie however it highlights a truth we often overlook- the hardest aspect of managing mental illness is to acknowledge its existence and getting loved ones to accept it.
