If I had watched this movie when it first debuted, I might have been impressed. However, watching this movie for the first time on Netflix as a 53 yr old woman, it was a let down. The acting was extra at times and the plot unbelievable most of the time. I agree with someone's suggestion that Jude Law would have made a better Tom.

The gorgeous actors Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow flawlessly portray a young elite couple living in Italy. Matt Damon is at his shifty creepiest playing the young man Law's father hires to bring Law back to New York. The story just smoothly glides along until the strange jarring moment when Tom imitates Dickie's father to him without warning - signaling a sudden change in tone. The emotional beats in the story are beautifully timed. Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives an unforgettable performance here as well. The setting in the charming Italian coast, the classical and jazz music peppered throughout, the cars, clothes and design help give the story its period appeal. It is a great film made of this classic tale of class ambition.
