Ben D Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) takes on many faces while traversing the many faces of Italy. A con man for whom we get little backstory, Ripley is thrust into socialite life in the picturesque, coastal town of Mongibello (Positano). The plot is a head-spinning array of attraction and envy. It is one of the better examples of an “in too deep” plot. The late 1950s Italian style is all-time. Ripley looks upon the stunningly handsome Dickie (Judge Law) at times as a cool older brother and others as an object of his desire. The way Damon is able to smile — like he’s pushing his teeth out the front of his mouth — is something I’ve never seen him do before. Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie, one of Dickie’s friend with the best line of the movie, “Don’t you want to f*ck everyone you see just once?” unfortunately receives the Boba fett treatment. He always was a screen-stealer. God, I miss him. The ending is shockingly dark with a lack of closure. I like it. Jude Law, Matt Damon, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and so many others each nail their part, and Minghella is the perfect director. How can you watch this, and not be drawn to all its humour, sadness, and existential angst around class and sexuality. You'll also quickly realise you probably already know a Tom Ripley, a Dickie Greenleaf, and a Freddie Miles! Ripley worms his way into the idyllic lives of Dickie and his girlfriend, plunging into a daring scheme of duplicity, lies and murder.
