What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tangerine shatters casting conventions and its filmmaking techniques are up-to-the-minute, but it's an old-fashioned comedy at heart -- and a pretty wonderful one at that.

Andrea Thompson Chicago Reader Their bond is largely what transforms another depressing Christmas in LA into a riotous adventure, even as it includes brothels, infidelity, meth, and kidnapping. Jun 21, 2023 Full Review Morgan Collado Autostraddle I enjoyed it... But the way it's set up, how it's shot, the progression of the plot - it's clear that it is offering up the story to a mostly white, bougie audience. It was voyeuristic in the worst possible way. Aug 13, 2021 Full Review Mey Rude Autostraddle Most of the movie's slow-burning heat comes from Mya Taylor's amazingly deep and deliberate - and often uproariously comedic - performance as Alexandra Aug 13, 2021 Full Review Jordan Brooks Vague Visages Baker’s film is a heartfelt rush to the head that extends across racial, sexual, gender and social boundaries. Aug 1, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine Tangerine unostentatiously celebrates fluidity, community, support and is generally quite hearteningly right-on... Jan 23, 2023 Full Review Kat Hughes THN From a technical standard point, Tangerine is a marvel. Baker’s filmmaking style pioneered modern indie film-making. Donnation G An incredibly well made albeit sometimes hard to watch film. Shows a stark contrast of how some people don't get to have the family gathered around a tree Christmas that so many of us take for granted. This is a look at how rough life is for some people and how they manage to adapt to very difficult circumstances. The film is incredibly entertaining from start to finish and one of the more riveting films I've seen in a long time. It's definitely not going to be a movie for everyone, but Baker is a major talent and while I'm not a fan of everything he has done I certainly recognize that he has a unique vision and tells stories that are interesting to watch. A great film with an overall positive message about staying by your friends side, no matter what the circumstances. Keep the kids away from this one for sure but if you are up for a wild story that never lets off the gas from start to finish this will be a film you really enjoy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review The H Shows how some people really live, it's sad but it's reality. A lot of crazy stuff happens but at the end it's about how actions have consequences but more importantly sticking together through anything is important. I see why it's in Sisterhood category, true friends bonds are unbreakable, how all of their lives come together at the end for better or worse, is amazing. Great film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Steve O Indi gone Way WRONG ! ! Christmas movie slightly better than Hallmark. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Michael L The worst Christmas movie that I ever saw Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Audience Member Beautiful! This movie explores raw humanity on the dirty sidewalks of LA. Its crudely shot style matches its message perfectly. It may take a little effort to get into it. But if you have some patience and an open mind, you'll be rewarded well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Tristan C Pure drama and chaos in a modern Tarantino-esque drama Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews
