What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tangerine shatters casting conventions and its filmmaking techniques are up-to-the-minute, but it's an old-fashioned comedy at heart -- and a pretty wonderful one at that.

Their bond is largely what transforms another depressing Christmas in LA into a riotous adventure, even as it includes brothels, infidelity, meth, and kidnapping. Go to Full Review

I enjoyed it... But the way it's set up, how it's shot, the progression of the plot - it's clear that it is offering up the story to a mostly white, bougie audience. It was voyeuristic in the worst possible way. Go to Full Review

Most of the movie's slow-burning heat comes from Mya Taylor's amazingly deep and deliberate - and often uproariously comedic - performance as Alexandra Go to Full Review

Grant H. @dj530 Nov 4 Sean Baker’s brilliance started early in his career, as seen in the titular American Dream drama in Tangerine. Taking the viewpoint of multiple story likes and how they overlap, this film captures the daily struggle of the oppressed and misunderstood. Not all is forgiven, but a compromise is met knowing that everyone is human, and everyone make mistakes. See more Albert W Oct 19 Wow this was bad. Avoid. See more Dave S Oct 5 About 10 seconds into Tangerine, I put things on pause and Googled “is Tangerine a high school media arts project shot on an iPhone?” Turns out the iPhone part was correct – the rest, not so much. Once you get past the weird aesthetic, the erratic editing, the distracting score, some weird shot selections, and director Sean Baker’s odd obsession with sex trade workers, you come to realize that there is a point to all the mayhem thanks to some really smart dialogue and characters who turn out to be more vulnerable than they first appear to be. Is it all worth the journey? Maybe. Maybe not. But at least it makes the effort. See more Hilda G. @hildaguerra Sep 16 If your a former meth addict and get triggered by paraphernalia don’t watch this!! But besides that it’s a funny skit. See more John F Sep 5 Better than Anora imo. Gritty and honest yet never exploits its subjects. All the more incredible that Baker shot this completely on his phone. See more Hao Ian L @HaOiAn Aug 27 Tangerine is a series of unpredictable events, each one even more unhinged and hilarious than the last, culminating in a surprisingly warm and humanistic portrait of friendship, survival, and dignity in the margins of society. The unexpected highlight from this, however, is the impressive and commendable indie filmmaking approach from one talented Sean Baker. See more Read all reviews
