Richard Williams Guardian Potter dances very well, but acts her scenes with the vacant half-smile of someone kidnapped by Moonies and force-fed Prozac. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Ryan Gilbey Independent (UK) The Tango Lesson proves beyond doubt that Potter is adept at breaking down established boundaries between artist and audience. Rated: 3/4 Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Geoff Brown Times (UK) You emerge from the cinema moved and exhilarated, with an un-English urge to dance away with the night, a rose between the teeth. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Matthew Sweet Independent on Sunday The effect is like being told an immensely long, shamelessly self-congratulatory anecdote by someone so deeply in love with herself that she has lost all sense of irony or humility. Aug 6, 2024 Full Review Philip French Observer (UK) This is a monumentally humourless, self-regarding picture. Konstantina S I think it`s an accoplised effort by all means about love relations between a man and a woman, and creativity in women. The approach is light and beautiful (music, acting, photo, direction) in a way of a bitter chocolate. There is a dominant easy-going melodie as the narration flows and something of a tragic smile beneath. Are all these 'depasse" ? Things of almost historic interest? In a sens that are the base in this field of our modern era, yes! From the point of vue that things have changed, I expect other opinions. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/13/23 Full Review isla s The dancing is quite hypnotic, with certainly pretty surroundings. It has a dreamlike quality with few others shown in the public settings - this is primarily about the 2 main characters interacting and expressing themselves to one another. The scenes in between the actual dances are a bit dull and less interesting. I enjoyed watching the film for the rhythm the choreographed scenes conveyed. The instrumental ballroom-esque music is quite enjoyable, in a toe tapping way and there's also some nice saxophone music. I guess the film is really all about how the relationship is formed, developed, deepens etc. between he who gives the lesson and the student, with frustrations and arguments clearly visible. Sometimes its a sad film, sometimes its almost uplifting - a quirky film, it won't suit, or appeal to, all but its certainly not bad. It's a little too 'arty' for my taste but it's not bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member These characters need a hobby besides dancing. /jk. It's actually a beautiful film. Self-indulgent. The dancing is fun, even for someone like me who couldn't care less. Great character study of a mild narcissist, his relationship hang-ups, and the role of faith in our lives. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member I have always loved this movie. Not only is it FULL of actual dancing (rather then just short vignettes to move the story along) it really explores the power dynamics in ballroom dance/tango Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member The photography is really nice and the overall mood is warm and appealing. There's a few very well-made dancing scenes too; I did feel though that there were too many of them - and little story in comparison. Quiet romantic dramas may not require the most mind-blowing plot but good characters are still needed. When towards the end the two protagonists get to talk a bit more about themselves and each other it's a stark contrast to the schematic meta meditation on tango and film that came before. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member This daring feminist film depicts the relationship between a female film director and her male muse, a tango dancer. The intersecting motivations behind their relationship compel them to work together, even as they question the purity of their love. Many beautiful depictions of dance. I found this film profoundly nourishing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
