The first feature film co-directed by Iranian and Israeli filmmakers Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir, TATAMI follows Leila (Arienne Mandi), an Iranian judo athlete who is put in political danger when her government tells her to fake an injury and withdraw from the world championships rather than face an Israeli rival in the final. Leila finds herself facing a life-or-death decision that could put the lives of her, her coach -- an ex-competitor herself -- and her family in danger. In a fight for freedom and dignity, what is she willing to give up.

Peter Rainer FilmWeek (LAist) It's really a political movie disguised as a sports film, and very pertinent to the times and the story itself. It's very well-acted and effective. Jul 2, 2025 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com A superb example of pop cultural translation that freshens up the clichés of the sports corruption thriller and gives the actors and filmmakers a chance to flex their considerable skills. Rated: 3.5/4 Jun 13, 2025 Full Review Beatrice Loayza New York Times The mounting tensions of these moving parts — and steely performances by Mandi and Amir — make for an engrossing thriller fueled by female rage. Jun 12, 2025 Full Review Calvin Law The Asian Cut While 'Tatami' does indulge in the occasional sports film cliché, the unapologetic way in which the film makes these women’s rage and fight back makes the film raw, fresh and essential viewing. Rated: 4/5 Aug 2, 2025 Full Review Kristy Strouse Film Inquiry Not only is it one of the best films of the year, but it might just be one of the most important. Jul 28, 2025 Full Review Stephen Silver Splice Today When it comes to great release timing, it’s hard to beat Tatami arriving on the heels of a war between Israel and Iran Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

longtimemoviefan S My wife and I having made a HUGE mistake yesterday in wasting 80 minutes of our lives watching the new Naked Gun movie (horrible), we thankfully made up for it big time today in seeing Tatami. Thank you, thank you for saving us! This movie is so, so well made. The script is very well written. The direction and acting is top notch. The editing and choreographed judo fights are so well done (even for us judo neophytes). And filming it in black & white is perfect. Huge kudos to everyone involved in this production...especially to the Iranian co-director for having the guts in joining to direct it (that could not have been an easy decision). The story could not be more timely (including for those of us in America watching what is currently becoming of our country). Thank you again for making this important film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/02/25 Full Review Ron D I don't know much about judo, but this is a great sports movie. I know something about Iran and political control. The leaders of Iran try to control even judo. There is tension on the mat and outside the gym. Guaranteed to keep your attention. The ending could be predictable, but it isn't. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/25 Full Review Lily A This film is gripping, thought-provoking, and so necessary during these times in our world. Bravo to the filmmakers and cast! Loved loved loved Jaime Ray Newman's performance as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/08/25 Full Review Barry S An important movie that reveals the control that despotic governments (in this case Iran) have over its athletes. Superb B/W cinematography, which one reviewer described as "boxing noir." On a personal level, being Jewish, it was affirmed that there is much hatred for Israel, the tiny nation of ten million people. However, the message of the movie focuses on the humanity of athletics in spite of the country they are representing. The acting is top notch, Arienne Mandi and Zar Amir Ebrahim (who also co-directed). A thriller that engages the audience from the opening frame. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/07/25 Full Review Zach L. Outstanding film. The cinematography, writing, directing and acting were top notch. Jaime Ray Newman’s performance was a stand out! Everyone needs to see this! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/01/25 Full Review Joannie B I absolutely loved this film. The directing and acting were superb. Congratulations to the talented Jaime Ray Newman and Guy Nattiv.
