Stephen Holden New York Times Here is San Francisco as it was in its bohemian twilight, on the eve of catastrophe. Jun 12, 2014 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times "Test" is woefully inadequate and unnecessary when compared with "Parting Glances" (1986) and "Longtime Companion" (1989). Jun 12, 2014 Full Review David Ehrlich AV Club Test is most effective when it prioritizes mood over psychological melodrama (which is often), but Johnson's approach is torn between Albert Camus and Brian De Palma. Rated: B- Jun 12, 2014 Full Review David Lamble Bay Area Reporter This entertaining time capsule, set in SF's modern-dance world, makes playful use of that fateful moment when the first blood test for the HIV virus debuted. Jun 19, 2020 Full Review Chris McCoy Memphis Flyer The film's combination of backstage drama and history lesson makes for a compelling package. Jan 8, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Filmed uniformly and rather blandly, perhaps due to the ramifications of fitting its period, Test isn't nearly as powerful as one would perhaps hope it to be. kk test It's good — I'd recommend. It's good — I'd recommend Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/24 Full Review Audience Member I really thought this was going to be another depressing gay movie set in the 80s. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not. I thoroughly enjoyed the dance scenes and the entire movie. I don't want to give spoilers so I will leave my review at that. This is easily the best movie that I have seen come from Wolfe. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A very well made film. My only wish is that the film would have focused more on the HIV and historical aspects on the film. I loved the dance sequences, but I felt they took up just a bit too much of the overall theme of the film. However, they were beautiful and I loved this film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Mesmerizing and eerie. Test shows AIDS paranoia of the mid 80 ties looming and disturbing the lives of young dancers, but without too much melodrama already seen everywhere else. Yes, plotwise not much happens in this movie, but outstanding choreography, brilliantly performed dance sequences, ethereal, charismatic and so real Scott Marlowe as main character Frankie all entwine to create absolute visual delight worth watching not only once. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Scott Marlowe is absolutely adorable with his performance. Both, with dance and acting. Charismatic, ethereal, very real. The dance scenes I ve been watching over and over again. Cant get tired of them. Good job with the 80 ties, too. For those, who like to watch human body in real movement, its an absolute delight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A tedious and slow look into the 1980s aids epidemic, feels rather unnecessary and is quite sterile.
