Vijay directs this engaging political drama chronicling the rise of the powerhouse that was Jayalalitha. Following her start in cinema, to eventual superstardom, and political entry, Thalaivi offers a pulpy look at her life on and off screen. And though not on the level of other films that centre around the principal characters (Iruvar for example), the movie is still a well made movie that entertains. With great performances from Kangana Ranaut, Aravind Swamy, Samuthirakani, and Nassar, the movie is an acting showcase through and through. Vijay does a fine job technically, as he always does. Like Madrasapattinam, the locations are transformed to those times. The movie is sleek and authentic. But as a drama, it feels more like a masala commercial film than a straight forward drama. Considering that the movie is based around real life subjects, the heightened dramatic scenes kind of take you aback from what could have been authentic sequences. Some of them work, but some of them make you feel like they're catchy dialogues that would work more in a masala action movie. Other than that, the movie is good, and delivers on almost all fronts.
