Divorced contractor Doug Salter (Hal Holbrook) has been living with his homosexual lover, Gary McClain (Martin Sheen), for years now, but has never admitted as much to his teenage son, Nick (Scott Jacoby). When Nick comes to visit, Gary moves out in order to keep up the ruse, but Nick manages to find out anyway. Overwhelmed with shame and confusion, he runs away, obliging Doug and Gary to chase after him and try to make him understand the nature of his father's relationship.
