Audience Member It's the Looney Tunes of 80s Canada! Quick fire physical comedy, absurd violence, and very entertaining! This is a must see! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member "Now old Mr. Johnson had troubles of his own, he had a yellow cat that wouldn't leave his home! A special plan with deception as the key, one little cat - how hard could it be?" The lyrics from a late-19th century comical song from Harry S. Miller really do fit into all of what was going on throughout the story. Back in my late '90s childhood Cartoon Network showed me O Canada!, a late-night program compiled all of the animated shorts made by the National Film Board of Canada. Although my memory was fuzzy back then I recently learned that The Cat Came Back was one of those featured shorts. The animation quality here is painted and crudely drawn, yet I still find it as great as it is. In addition, the action once after the man takes the cat in has its hilarity to cause such a problematic home wreck and really, really fast chases. I can tell that the cat was in an excited mood that he looks like he was gonna play, but no way, that furry yellow ball is of extreme annoyance. If that isn't enough to scare some viewers, the theme of the cartoon here is rather dark with a grim ending. The 1988-released The Cat Came Back was written and directed by Cordell Barker and produced in Winnipeg by the National Film Board of Canada. It has garnered over 15 awards, including a Genie Award for Best Animated Short. The short has to give me an important moral right here: Never abandon a stray cat.
