Fascinating, insightful documentaries like this have the ability to enhance our knowledge towards the form, as well deserving appreciation for the subject’s painstakingly creative challenge in modifying a picture to its intended vision. (B+)

The film editor, like so many jobs in the industry, is so often overlooked when it comes to evaluating a finished product, but The Cutting Edge hopes to change that, and truly does a great job of highlighting just how important the job is. Like other exhibition-style documentaries of this kind, the technical presentation is nothing more than directors and editors speaking about their craft, often intercut with footage for comparison. The real strength of this documentary is simply the passion behind each of the featured editors, how they all view the process not just as a technical process in the final stages of a film's "birth" but as a way to craft and elicit emotions and juggle the flow of a story. Although, the documentary is, very fittingly, well edited: intercuts between directors and their editors about their individual viewpoints on the process, are insightful and, in the case of one moment with Alexander Payne and Kevin Tent discussing editing Election, genuinely amusing. It runs a lean 98 minutes, but it's the kind of subject matter that could run another 98 and never become boring. Anyone with even the slightest interest in filmmaking should check this one out.

I got to watch this in film class, and the interviews are very insightful. Quentin Tarantino is a boss at interviews. Anyone who is obssessed with the technical aspects of film will orgasm watching Walter Murch editing. Overall, a great compilation of film editing is explained from Birth of a Nation all the way to well Star Wars: Attack of the Clones. *Boos* I want to see a revamped version of this in 2015.
