Critics Consensus

The Great Mouse Detective may not rank with Disney's classics, but it's an amiable, entertaining picture with some stylishly dark visuals.

Jill Rachlin Entertainment Weekly Older kids may be less enthused by this mousy story, though parents, particularly Basil Rathbone fans, will marvel at the accuracy with which this sophisticated homage hits Holmes. Rated: A- Nov 12, 2019 Full Review Caren Weiner Campbell Entertainment Weekly There's no need for details - you know his methods, Watson - but suffice it to say that The Great Mouse Detective's few tunes are unmemorable and all the action (aside from the inventive chase sequences) is snooze-worthy. Nov 12, 2019 Full Review Charles Solomon Los Angeles Times "The Great Mouse Detective" reflects the energy and enthusiasm of a talented group of young artists stretching their wings for the first time. Nov 12, 2019 Full Review Dan Webster Spokesman-Review (Washington) Especially entertaining is Vincent Price, who imbues the voice of dastardly Prof Ratigan with just the right amount of ham. Rated: 4/4 Jul 27, 2024 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com ... never less than enjoyable, but there’s a few narrative flourishes, like the wonderfully elaborate manner of execution prepared for Holmes, that look forwards to the best comic exaggerations of the later Disney style... Rated: 4/5 Jan 29, 2024 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn The film is a technical marvel and there is no denying the strength of Vincent Price, but the mystery is mishandled and the protagonists are simply not fun to be around. Karl N When Disney still made stuff people liked. It’s excellent. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/23/24 Full Review Noe G The great mast detective is one of my favorite Disney films I give this movie a 10/10 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review C Z In my opinion, one of the 2 best Disney animated films of all time. The other being "Rescuers Down Under". Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Blu B It's Good! An underrated Disney Gem. Everything is solid about it. The animation is moody with the night setting but it's not breathtaking or super detailed save for the clock tower climax which is clearly where the budget went. The music isn't super catchy and there is only 2 musical numbers in this but both are good. The little girl and all the other characters are well voiced but they don't really get much backstory. This defintely could've used more backstory at times and been more of a cat and mouse game between Basil and the bad guy which it is for the most part but I feel you could get rid of the girl almost entirely. It defintely feels like a Saturday Morning cartoon type of vibe animated movie which isn't a bad thing but does lack a little of the big screen story. Besides that though its a fine little gem that is fun and memorable the entire way. Anyone who is a big fan of Animated movies and especially 80's ones will like this a lot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Matthew M I am so pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. While the plot isn't the strongest it's full of lovable characters with great chemistry. The villain is delightfully campy and wicked and is definitely one of the more memorable Disney villains. The relationship between the father and daughter was so sweet and the chemistry between basil and doctor Dawson was so enjoyable. Another element I really liked is that this is definitely one of Disney's maturer animated movies and it doesn't rely on too silliness or too much singing. Definitely recommend this one if you haven't seen it. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
