Synopsis
The Rev. Holvak (Glenn Ford) is a country preacher faced with the difficulties of making ends meet and keeping people in the pews. Although he receives support from his family -- most notably his wife, Elizabeth (Julie Harris) -- the reverend is often at odds with the strict church authorities, including Deacon Hurd (Dabbs Greer). Making matters worse, Holvak must contend with mean-spirited sheriff Hog Yancy (Harris Yulin), who makes life miserable for many of the locals.
