During the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, a group of international travelers tries to get out of Budapest, but are thwarted at every turn by the Soviets. With the airport closed, they decide to flee by bus, but are stopped at the Austrian border by Major Surov (Yul Brynner). He delays them indefinitely, very much interested in British Baroness Diana Ashmore (Deborah Kerr), and little knowing that her lover is a Hungarian freedom fighter (Jason Robards Jr.).

Clyde Gilmour Maclean's Magazine Although it takes a rather vague and sentimentalized view of the clash of ideologies involved in the 1956 Hungarian uprising, some excellent acting performances and tightening suspense make this romantic drama well worth seeing. Audience Member Miss Kerr is spectacular as always. Yul Brynner great as the Russian, but then, he was one. Robert Morley and the rest of the supporting cast get high marks, with the possible exception of Jason Robards, one of those actors who just annoys me. Terrific cinematography and satisfactory pacing. The conclusion is a bit ambiguous; do we have a man who sacrificed his career, and ultimately his life, for unrequited love? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/29/24 Full Review Steve D A mixed bag but more good than bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/13/23 Full Review s r Set in Hungary where Russia has sent in troops to quell the resistance, we have a group of foreigners stuck in an airport looking to leave but are sent to Austria where they are detained at the border. It then proceeds with a woman desperate to save her treasonous love who she will do anything to save. Fine acting and of course I am a sucker for anything Hungarian. The language, gypsy music, Russian drinking songs, border crossings, langos and stuffed cabbage made me enjoy it. It then culminates in ironic tragedy where even people who can be good can have it bad. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review ashley h The Journey is an amazing film. It is about a group of Westerners who try to leave the city when the the Soviets occupys the country of Hungary in 1956. Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner give excellent performances.
