Ann Ross Maclean's Magazine Edward Robinson is tough and strenuous as the gangster, and the film has its tense moments. But the plot is labored and the ending is unconvincing. Jul 19, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Steve D Entertaining because of the cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Audience Member Solid drama with EGR memorable in the lead. The tragic Rose Stradner comes across well in one of her few films. The only misstep the film makes is the ridiculous moustache that Jimmy Stewart is forced to wear. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Different take on the gangster genre - with lots of solid acting in spite of uninspired camera-work and editing. Always a joy to see Lionel Stander (wouldn't be a gangster flick without him) and John Carradine. Also watch for Louise Beavers, Horace McMahon, and Joan Blondell. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Fairy standard 1930s gangster film, but fine performances by Edward G. Robinson and an oddly mustached Jimmy Stewart elevate this one to something a cut above the norm. For my money it's the second half of the film, when Robinson is released from prison and tries to reconnect with his son and re-establish his post-prohibition criminal empire that the film really shines. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member NOT LEAN HUNGRY EDDIE G OF THE EARLY THIRTIES BUT NOT LESS INTERESTING LATE THIRTIES EDDIE G Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This is not a bad film by any means, it's only flaw being is it has not survived the aging process like some other films during that time have been able to do.
