Audience Member A nicely low-life British noir with an unpredictable plot and a satisfyingly untidy ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member An outsider film with bags of atmosphere--Superb British revenge thriller, a noir with a message!! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member The fact that for a revenge flick it's a little on the talky side will leave some disappointed. However, it's a well made British noir with a strong John Mills performance in the lead role. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member British film noir of the 50s. This is a well directed and written piece by the talented Robert Hamer. A man is wrongly jailed for a murder he did not commit. When he gets out he starts uncovering the true story.. I beautiful black and white with an excellent John Mills performane...he is wound up so tight you can hear his buttons popping...but there is a moment towards the end of the film where he smiles and this is an amazing transformation. There are a couple of good chases and the cast is littered with familiar character actor faces all giving 100%. A good watch and filmed on location in Gravesend, Kent. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member John Mills stars as a man framed for murder in this stylish British film noir. The people who betrayed and testified against him are now worried as Mills has been released from prison after a dozen years. During that time revenge has turned Mills into an unfeeling cold hearted brute, with one thing on his mind. One of the witness' who betrayed him was his girlfriend (Elizabeth Sellars as the Femme Fatale) and in a coincidental plot development she has now married the police officer (John McCullum) who arrested Mills for the original murder. What I find interesting is how the point of view changes from each character who all have to deal with moral uncertainties. The main reason to watch this film however is the use of the locations in the streets and docks of South East England. The use of stark black and white lighting techniques add atmosphere and menace, as in one scene where Mill's presence taunts and intimidates one of the witness'. Mills is solid as usual. This is a tale of revenge and redemption, and overall an enjoyable film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting British revenge thriller, set in Gravesend and the North Kent Marshes. John Mills plays a man imprisoned for 12 years for a murder he didn't commit. After being released from prison he sets out to get revenge on those who gave evidence against him. The setting lends the film an eerie quality, and Mills' presence carries what could have been a simple B movies. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
