Audience Member Never saw a Wheeler and Woolsey movie before, so I gave it a whirl. Weak script and clueless direction. You could dimly see their comedic spark, but they didn't have a fraction of the comedic skills of their better known contemporaries. This movie had a long climactic comic sequence on two runaway trains filled with dynamite. A few chuckles to be had, and it certainly had more of my attention than the rest of the movie, but none of the gags were as good as the weakest sequence in The General. Nice to see for the sake of seeing them first hand, but I won't make any detours to see any of their movies again. Rosce the Rainmaker (Robert Woolsey) gets run out of one town for not being able to conjure up rain and runs into Billy (Bert Wheeler) whose house vanishes in a cyclone. They take refuge in Billy's cellar. Roscoe invited Billy to ride with him to California in the remains of his automobile. It turns out that a banker has hired Roscoe to bring a drought stricken area rain, but the banker is under the gun by an unscrupulous land owner who wants to build a flume to bring water to the area farmers. Since the farmers cannot afford to chip in, the land owner hopes to get them to sign over their land to him. Our heroes arrive and run afoul of the landowner along with his devious son (George Meeker) and the highlight is a locomotive chase with one enginer pursuing another at full speed with dynamite stashed aboard both trains and our heroes trying to get off without being killed. Again, "The Rainmakers" doesn't hold a candle to "Diplomaniacs," but it is an okay 78-minute, black & white chuckler. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
