Isabel Quigly The Spectator Some of the jokes may be elderly, but some humour keeps well, like Christmas pudding : my favourite Western chestnut, for instance, the hotel notice saying : 'No spurs in bed.' Audience Member The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw is a film that I wanted to like so bad but I ended up hating it. The film despite having a decent performance from Jayne Mansfield, good sense of humor, and decent costume designs was still outweighed by the bad qualities. The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw had so much corny writing by Howard Dimsdale, pathetic direction by Raoul Walsh, horrendous visuals, and below average editing by John Shirley. When it comes to the best in the west, The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw is definitely not. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Directed by Raoul Walsh (The Roaring Twenties (1939), High Sierra (1941) and White Heat (1948)), production on this comedy western was to have taken place in Hollywood, but was moved to England and Spain to save on the budget. It was a canny decision, it would be the first western to be made in Spain, (a trend would soon begin), and it has an odd but eclectic mix of British and American actors too. It begins in England in the 1880's, Jonathon Tibbs (Kenneth More) is the nephew of Lucius Tibbs (Robert Morley), runs a gunsmith business, but Jonathon has no interest in the business, prefering instead to invent odd contraptions, including a steam powered carriage. But, business is slow, and when he hears about how guns are widely used in America, he travels over there to try and sell some, and he finds himself in the lawless town of Fractured Jaw, where he finds himself standing up to local outlaws and Indians. Jonathon is appointed Sheriff of Fractured Jaw, and he is aided by hotel owner Miss Kate (Jayne Mansfield), and he decides to bring law and order to this town. It's a very silly film, and the idea of seeing More in a western sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it isn't, it's very well filmed and even the comedy holds up. Oh, and look out for Sid James playing a drunk, this could be a dry run for what he later did in Carry On Cowboy (1965). :P Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member great change from westerns of the time, interesting story line. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Audience Member It has an acceptable energy in the first half but this goes nowhere on account of its general dopiness. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Entertaining comedy, even if just for Jayne Mansfield's implausably large bust and tiny waist. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Good comedy that got better as it went along but wouldve been way better without all the singing Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
