Audience Member The Rani here is a one-note character. There's nothing to her personality outside of some stirring speeches about freedom, which is a shame, given the magnetism of the historical figure. The made up romance between her and the British officer doesn't work at all. There are some brilliant sequences though, such as the ballroom scene, and the scene which juxtaposes the military advance of the British with frivolous festivities at court. Combining marching bagpipes and music from some Indian reed instrument is pretty genius. Watching cannons fire at night is pretty awesome. However, the brilliance doesn't make up for excessive musical numbers that don't tie in with the plot at all. I've heard that this is how Indian movies work; if so, it's not really my cup of tea.
