Disaster strikes on Aug. 5, 2010, as a copper and gold mine collapses in Chile, trapping 33 men underground. With more than 2,000 feet of rock in their way, members of a rescue team work tirelessly for 69 days to save the seemingly doomed crew. Beneath the rubble, the miners begin an epic quest to survive, contending with suffocating heat and the need for food and water. Based on a real story that happened in Chile (filmed in part here and with some Chilean actors), this is the worst case of whitewashing in recent years, as well as being the film that contains Juliette Binoche’s worst performance ever, and that’s a sin.

Riggen certainly still employs a plentiful creative license to dramatize and compress this trauma into two hours, but the lionizing on one end and the vilifying on the other is remarkably low.

“The 33” hits nearly every disaster movie tick. I still enjoyed the film overall, but I kept waiting for it to do something unique. It never quite does.

The negative reviewers with the complaints about Hollywood formulaic approach and sentimentality didn't watch the same film that I just watched. This was a fine well acted and well scripted film. Enjoy it!

Com apenas um vilão (os proprietários da Mineradora, que tinham conhecimentos das mazelas que as infligia) e vários heróis (Mario Sepúlveda, engenheiros, técnicos), um lindo filme e linda homenagens a esses guerreiros sobreviventes, "rádio é inútil, kit médico vazio, poços de ventilação sem escadas, pouca comida armazenada." Mesmo ciente do desfecho chorei horrores quando leram a msg dos 33 vivos e quando os resgataram, lindo e emocionante, 3 pilares: solidariedade, a esperança e o bom humor. A San José Mining Company foi considerada inocente de negligência criminosa e os mineiros nunca foram indenizados. No entanto, eles permanecem irmãos até hoje. "Nos ensina quais são os três elementos que podem salvar vidas, mesmo nas situações mais inconcebíveis de privação: a solidariedade, a esperança e o bom humor. Que sirva de lição para nossas vidas — cheias de ar, espaço, alimento e liberdade. “Gracias a la vida!”"

Interesting true story and well acted, but overall not well done. It evokes an emotional response at times (family learning they're alive) but fails completely at other moments, like the last supper, which is awkward and almost embarrassing to watch.
