      Critics Consensus

The 33 offers an appropriately inspirational account of real-life heroism, but its stirring story and solid performances are undermined by a flawed focus and an overreliance on formula.

Aurora A This is a good movie in so many ways, don't read the bad reviews and just enjoy the story. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/22/24 Full Review luciano o Inspiring and well crafted film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Interesting true story and well acted, but overall not well done. It evokes an emotional response at times (family learning they're alive) but fails completely at other moments, like the last supper, which is awkward and almost embarrassing to watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I enjoyed this one overall, good inspirational true story of survival after disaster strikes in a Chile mine. Good cast to support the story too. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Based on a true story, it was amazing. Well thought out and executed, they did a great job in making the emotions of the miners real, even if that emotion was ennui. The end truly was bittersweet as you read what happened to the original 33. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com While the elements that do not work frustrate, the stuff revolving around those who truly deserve to be labeled as heroes thankfully never does. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 22, 2016 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Scroll.in There is plenty of drama and suspense in this true-life story, but the screenplay relies too heavily on formula and is swathed in Hollywood sentimentality. Jun 21, 2016 Full Review Max Weiss Baltimore Magazine Corny as it was, I cried when the men were rescued. Rated: 2.5/4 Jun 12, 2016 Full Review Jaime Grijalba Vague Visages Based on a real story that happened in Chile (filmed in part here and with some Chilean actors), this is the worst case of whitewashing in recent years, as well as being the film that contains Juliette Binoche’s worst performance ever, and that’s a sin. Dec 1, 2023 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Riggen certainly still employs a plentiful creative license to dramatize and compress this trauma into two hours, but the lionizing on one end and the vilifying on the other is remarkably low. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “The 33” hits nearly every disaster movie tick. I still enjoyed the film overall, but I kept waiting for it to do something unique. It never quite does. Rated: 3/5 Aug 25, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews
