Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story -- set in the summer of 1986 -- that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager (Ken Jeong) and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.

Christian Zilko indieWire It’s nice to see his characters behave in a developmentally appropriate way for a change. Rather than sad looks into grown men who stubbornly refuse to grow up, Smith is able to give us a cute portrait of kids who just haven’t gotten there yet. Rated: B+ Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com Light and self-deprecating where “Clerks 3” was depressing and verklempt, “The 4:30 Movie” offers viewers a reassuring trip down memory lane. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap Sadly, I’d rather watch any of Smith’s fake movies than The 4:30 Movie, because at least they seem enjoyably weird. Sep 12, 2024 Full Review Joshua M. Patton CBR Smith's love letter to youth, the movies and the '80s is precisely the kind of film that people lament doesn't get made anymore. Rated: 8/10 Sep 16, 2024 Full Review Sean Burns North Shore Movies You’d reckon it would be impossible for someone to do something 15 times without learning anything, but it beggars belief how much worse Smith has gotten at the basics of camera blocking and shot composition. Sep 14, 2024 Full Review Robert Kojder Flickering Myth Even though it all leads to a charming conclusion, far too much of The 4:30 Movie is concerned with excessive indulgence, making every cringe joke possible about the future of movies and time-wasting subplots Rated: 2/5 Sep 13, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Thomas L A real pleasure! Funny, warm and full of charm! Feels more like John Hughes or early Richard Linklater than signature Kevin Smith :) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Jim C Might be Kevin Smiths best movie yet. Wonderful love story to the 80s, movies, and being in high school. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Tim A Just got out from "The 4:30 Movie". I was lucky enough to catch it at 4:30. This was such a fun movie. It honestly is, in my mind, the second best movie @thatkevinsmith has given us. It was fun from start to finish. It is in no way an R rated movie and the fact it didn't get a pg-13 just robs a whole demographic from witnessing this wonderful loveletter to the 1980's. The entire cast was pitch perfect and when the ending came I immediately wanted another 45 minutes with this group of friends. In a world of tent pole movies and superhero franchises, it's great that Kevin is still giving us heartfelt stories that allow us to enjoy a trip to the theater and not leave disappointed. I cannot wait to see it in theaters again and eventually on whichever streaming service it finds it's new home at. You should definitely go see this in a theater, but if you don't, once it comes to your home you'll surely be in for 1 hour and 27 minutes of joy. Great job to the entire cast and crew on a successful piece of cinema Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Tyler F A really solid 90 minute comedy that is packed wall to wall with laughs and emotion. If youre a Kevin Smith fan, youre gonna love it. And if youre not, The 4:30 Movie is a lot less toned down when it comes to the over the top antics of the View Askewniverse, with a grounded, but still raunchy, teen comedy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Michael S This was a fun little jaunt back to Kevin's beginnings and I loved it. By no means an masterpiece but it makes life so enjoyable having such distractions. I loved all the little references to his other works. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Robert R This movie left me ready to take a shower and rinse off the feeling I was left with after viewing the movie. Coming of age in that area of NJ must have been devoid of any decent guidance and I did not find it in any way uplifting or with a moral center.
