A competent but tired retread of mob movie tropes, The Alto Knights pits De Niro vs. De Niro with no real victor emerging.

Katie Walsh Tribune News Service More interesting in the context of Robert De Niro’s filmography than it is necessarily as a standalone picture. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 29, 2025 Full Review Christy Lemire FilmWeek (LAist) I don't know why this movie exists. It breathes no new new life into the mobster movie genre at all and will only serve to remind you of better movies. Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) Broadly speaking, I like this as a piece of classical gangster theater. Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Colin Biggs That Shelf The prevailing feeling throughout The Alto Knights‘ is that it should’ve been made 20 years ago. Too much of the film feels like a replay of Martin Scorsese‘s greatest hits. Apr 26, 2025 Full Review Emiliano Basile EscribiendoCine The Alto Knights is a decent film. When it relies on the classic elements of gangster cinema,...it offers a compelling story, and although smaller in scale, it's no less interesting than Scorsese's epics. Luis Not a bad movie but definitely underwhelming. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/17/25 Full Review John S Excellent period piece based to some degree on historical events. The acting was superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/13/25 Full Review Rajesh S It is more like a documentary but, very interesting and somewhat long Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Shawn H It’s was ok. Not a lot of action like I’m used to when you think of a gánster movie Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/08/25 Full Review Coleen T Don't believe the jaded film critics. The Alto Knights is an excellent film - the story and acting are superb. If you appreciate Robert DeNiro's acting, in general, you will love watching this movie. Directed by the great Barry Levinson. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review Najada Very Very Good Film. Love the narration, the editing, the Cinematography, the acting, the directing, the production design. Overall a fantastic film. The story is well written and recounts the events taking you through the 1950's 60's & 70's. Classic Mobster movie done in very good taste. Not a whole lot of explosions, gunfire, shootouts, or bloody murders. I can probably count on one hand how many people were taken out on camera. This movie is incredibly refreshing and does it's job as a well told story. it is interesting, a bit thought provoking, a history lesson, a bit funny and a little bit sad. Not a huge emotional rollercoaster, but not every movie needs to have you emotionally wound up. there seems to be a lot of bad reviews around this movie. I personally think it's because there are a lot of people that have forgotten what true cinema is, and the filmmakers that made this movie come from the golden age of film. This one could very well be one of the last of it's kind. Anyone who cherishes the art of cinema should check this out. It is a master class in creative storytelling. and Robert de Niro playing two characters was awesome. some folks said it was hard to tell them apart but I thought it was very well done and easy to distinguish. It was pretty fluid for me. Enjoy the movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
