Out of the blue, Gaby’s life is turned upside down when an arrogant hot-air balloon pilot crash-lands on top of her coop full of heritage chickens, and sets up home next door to her. The collision exposes a festering family conflict and forces Gaby to confront the haughty balloonist as well as her own problematic past. Previously, Gaby’s life had consisted of caring for her energetic seven-year-old son, her ailing mother, and a suicidal rooster, while struggling to keep her cleaning job at a local hotel. Over the summer, Gaby slowly opens up to her new neighbor, thanks to the growing bond between him and her son. But when the balloonist gets too close to her, she clams up again, much to her son’s chagrin. Will she be able to make amends and give herself and her young son a better future?

Dennis M This is a drama — not a children’s or family movie The story revolves around a very spirited boy struggling with the absence of his father and a strong-willed, emotionally scarred mother, who also takes care of her own mother. It’s a story about wounded souls trying to connect — sometimes clumsily, sometimes painfully — yet ultimately finding that even broken hearts can still learn to love and rediscover happiness. The film carries a deep emotional layer: raw reality infused with a touch of magical realism, very much in the spirit of Disney. You can now stream it on Disney+. In this movie, Kuif is a lively child, full of emotion and energy, trying in his own way to cope with the absence of his father. His behavior reflects how children respond to the world around them — how their emotions and actions often mirror what they feel, miss, or hope for. That is precisely what makes this film so beautiful and moving: it looks at human behavior with kindness and shows how love, in all its forms, remains the driving force. At the center is a strong yet troubled mother who, in addition to caring for her son, also shoulders the care of her own mother. Three generations — each with their own pain and longing — try to understand and hold on to each other. Then, unexpectedly, the balloonist, played by Pieter Embrechts, enters their lives, bringing a new perspective, both literally and figuratively. The grandmother, portrayed by the phenomenal Frieda Pittoors, delivers a stunning performance that leaves a lasting impression — rightfully earning a nomination for the Golden Calf. Her role brings a tender, almost poetic strength to the story. The film also captivates with its breathtaking landscapes and charming Dutch village settings. Every scene is meticulously crafted, each frame a visual delight that feels alive and immersive. The locations are perfectly chosen, showcasing the beauty of the Netherlands in a way that makes you fall in love with the country all over again. Coupled with a flawless, evocative musical score, the atmosphere becomes almost tangible — a feast for the senses that elevates the story and lingers long after the credits roll. The result is a film that truly touches the heart: a story about wounded souls who, despite everything, learn to believe in warmth, connection, and love once again. A raw yet hopeful drama with a touch of magical realism — entirely in the spirit of Disney. 🎥 Available on Disney+. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
