Reuniting Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon on screen for the first time in twenty years, THE BEST YOU CAN is a sharp, touching, and laugh-out-loud exploration of change, losing our bearings, and finding connection in the most unexpected places. This character-driven comedy is a reminder that sometimes the people who understand us best are the ones who are nothing like us.

With strong performances and a fresh premise about an unexpected friendship in middle age, but far too many creaky comic tropes, the uneven film is always watchable but never pops off the screen in a gripping way. Go to Full Review

So no, perhaps this isn’t the most sophisticated project these accomplished veterans might have chosen. But sometimes, it’s enough just to spend time with people you enjoy. Go to Full Review

While a little contrived at times, Michael J. Weithorn’s unassuming dramedy feels comfortingly sweet thanks to an earned ending and the real-life couple’s natural on-screen ease. Go to Full Review

The Best You Can is a predictable but appealing comedy/drama about a divorced security guard and an unhappily married urologist whose unlikely friendship turns into something more. The performances and amusing banter are the main reasons to watch. Go to Full Review

That The Best You Can is far too easy a film to invest in affectionately will diverge audiences, to be sure. Go to Full Review

This is something many people of a certain age may identify with, the inevitability of growing old in a society that caters to a generation to which they both don’t belong. What makes it work is its star teaming. Go to Full Review

Mark A. @drfoto 5d Much more than I expected. The story is about relationships and how they unfold on their own paths and timelines. The cast work well together and the chemistry between Bacon and Sedgwick is the spark that carries the movie. While light moments partially balance the greater depth of the storyline elements, don’t expect laugh-out-loud comedy. Bacon does the comedic lifting in the role of a rough around the edges security guard. Sedgwick fields the more serious challenges of career and a more senior partner in a long marriage. Very true to life, the story underscores unexpected turns and how the willingness to embrace and work through hardship reveal the meaningful rewards further down the road. The last few scenes will whiplash from beautifully-written seriousness to joyful fun, and will have you dancing out of the room with an uncontrollable grin. It feels a bit like a throw back to a 70s flick. See more Dawn M. @AnnapolisLassie Nov 27 Meh. Watchable, but lacking depth. See more Read all reviews
