Otis Ferguson The New Republic Some have found the story hackneyed but I didn’t notice, for the director, Stuart Heisler, has managed to keep it going with a lot of fresh stuff about dogs and people. May 8, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Just an awesome moving film, of 2 coming of age boys, one white the other black, working with a singular purpose. It's a family film but I heard one reviewer said grown men cried. Probably because all the feelings men are taught to repressed & watching these kids brought it all to the surface. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic film. I cannot recommend this one enough! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Audience Member Fantastic film. I cannot recommend this one enough! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member In the video of Oscar contenders listing films that made them cry, this was Robert Duvall's pick. It's a sweet film about a boy and his dog in Georgia. The title refers to dogs who only get food for themselves, who aren't hunting dogs, so when the boy fears his dog will turn into a biscuit eater he trains him to compete in a bird hunting competition. It's a bit dated regarding the African American characters, but overall it's a decent kid's movie. It's considered to be one of the first sleeper hits, it was a huge hit in 1940.
