Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com There's something here, but it's darker, and more elusive, than perhaps Fox even knows. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 22, 2016 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times Like Blackout itself, "The Blackout Experiments" is often chilling and hard to shake. Jul 21, 2016 Full Review J. R. Jones Chicago Reader The participants provide plenty of heavy breathing about the darkness within, though when the mysterious organizers, a couple of young theater types, finally sit for an on-camera interview, their idea of what it's all about seems pretty vague. Jul 21, 2016 Full Review Sherilyn Connelly SF Weekly In the end, the experiment feels more like a hollow thrill than anything else. Jul 20, 2016 Full Review Norman Wilner NOW Toronto It doesn't look like any fun at all, and Fox lets the "victims" tell their stories in video testimonials, explaining why they willingly go back for more. Rated: 2/5 Jul 20, 2016 Full Review Heather Wixson Daily Dead The Blackout Experiments evolved into a surprisingly transformative journey for the participants, exploring their connections to Blackout and demonstrating how the haunt has become something more personal to many who have dared to take its challenge. Audience Member It was ok. There are much much more extreme haunts than this one (the special is on Netflix). It was cool to see how much it affected these people, but again, if they tried the other haunt they would've given up for sure. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member So glad I watched this. Not for everyone. But I loved it. I would love to be part of a Blackout some day. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/18 Full Review Audience Member Good S&M reality show film. Also a good study for abnormal psychology students & a jackoff movie for special forces drill sergeants & interrogators. Conger your worst demons. Now face & conquer them! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I wanted to love this movie. I would have settled for liking it. Unfortunately, it never really figures out exactly what it wants to be... and as a result, fails at everything it attempts. As a documentary, it spins its wheels with endlessly repetitive clips in which the various participants talk about "the darkness" that lives within them. As a horror vehicle, it provides absolutely no thrills and/or chills. In the end, it comes off feeling like a very long, not very good promo for Blackout and the guys who run it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member Sadly the subject seems a lot more interesting than the film which is a pity because the concept looks rather clever but without much substantive input from the designers as to what it's based on or how it is put together the whole thing becomes a bit of a mish-mash. With the participants seemingly willing to be filmed, it's also a shame we couldn't see more of their experience, especially as in some cases it seems to have had beneficial effects. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member ''rebirth'' is a better film Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
