Audience Member The opening scene of The Blacks is dripping with dread. In a dark room lies a black cat, its wide eyes searching the room, a room bare except for blood stains on the wall. Slowly in the dark we make out the shape of newly born kittens writhing around next to the cat. All the while the score fills us with a deep sense of foreboding. Unfortunately this was to be the only scene I enjoyed. I like to think I'm usually pretty quick on the uptake, but for much of the film's length (and its the longest 75 minutes I can remember), I had no idea what was going on. I don't need everything explained to me, but a little exposition now and then would nice. Maybe it helps if you know more about the Balkan war. Anyway, nice atmospherics, shame about the rest of it.
