Matthew D A beautifully made film with a captivating dramatic acting turn from Whitney Houston. Director Mick Jackson’s romance drama thriller The Bodyguard (1992) is quite stunning to be honest. Jackson’s direction is surprisingly moody and striking. I wasn’t expecting cinematographer Andrew Dunn to use so many carefully blocked wide shots and breathtaking close-ups. The shadowy lighting by Paul Ary is amazing. I wish random thrillers still looked as good as The Bodyguard. Writer Lawrence Kasdan accomplishes a lot with an intimate romance drama, suspenseful thriller, and compelling drama about a nervous singer and guilt ridden former secret service agent. I love how serious The Bodyguard takes itself, like this does not feel like Taken. It’s closer to In the Line of Fire. The Bodyguard is very engaging and enjoyable, especially because of Whitney Houston’s mesmerizing natural acting and powerful vocals. It did not deserve its Razzie nominations at all as it has aged quite well. I’m glad Whitney’s magnificent singing on her killer soundtrack for The Bodyguard is still the highest selling soundtrack album of all time. “I Have Nothing” and “Run to You” are bold and inspired. Her massive vocals on “I Will Always Love You” are insane. Kevin Costner is intriguing as the stoic bodyguard Frank Farmer, who sees himself as a resolute samurai type of tough guy. Costner is pretty cool in The Bodyguard with great chemistry alongside Whitney. He’s often surprisingly funny in a sly way and tough as needed. He feels very serious and brings out the best in Whitney. Whitney Houston is gorgeous, moving, fascinating, and compelling as star singer Rachel Marron. Houston is not afraid of performing as a singer who is initially unlikable and rude, into a tender and realistic woman. Her fears as a mother and famous figure feel natural, while she brings all the charm in the romance. Houston’s singing abilities are the stuff of legend and she’s genuinely remarkable with massive notes being belted out on a dime. Gary Kemp is fun as the annoying publicist Sy Spector. Bill Cobbs is super nice and patient as the concerned security boss Bill Devaney. Ralph Waite is pleasant as Costner’s friendly father Herb Farmer. Tomas Arana is creepy as the forceful bodyguard Greg Portman. Michele Lamar Richards is very interesting as the jealous sister Nicki Marron, who comes with her own insecurities. Mike Starr is a riot as the portly guard Tony Scipelli. Christopher Birt is wonderful as the helpful chauffeur Henry Adams. DeVaughn Nixon is cute as the little son Fletcher Marron. He was a pretty good actor already. Editors Donn Cambern and Richard A. Harris’ smooth cutting is engrossing and leaves us mostly with Costner to worry about protecting Whitney’s Rachel. Composer Alan Silvestri did a great job with the pretty score. Susan Nininger’s outfits for Whitney range from flattering girl dresses to outrageous singer armor. Hairstyling Kelly Muldoon and Elle Elliott Medusah’s haircuts on Whitney are very becoming on her. In short, The Bodyguard is enthralling for 130 minutes of paranoia, romance, and thrills thanks to Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner’s acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Darren B Bodyguard is a film that saw Whitney Houston make her best accomplished performance in showing a stubborn pop star who is not willing to accommodate any changes to her life until reality hits home. Kevin Costner is excellent and everything about this movie is something I can't stop watching. Could it be slightly better yes in terms of some of the screenplay flow but overall the film manages to pull off a well rounded film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Birithivy Y The Bodyguard - 6/10. Rest in peace Whitney Houston, one of the greatest voices to grace this earth. Surprisingly, I’m not a big fan of the “I Will Always Love You” version in the film. I love the album version, and I feel they should’ve used that version here, but I digress. Also, I totally agree with the majority of people: what the hell was that abrupt ending? You could’ve easily ended the film at the tarmac, would’ve been a lovely ending but no, they decide to end it on that weird note. The Bodyguard though, as a film, is a little disappointing. I mean, its got a familiar and cheesy story that could’ve had easily been awesome. I disagree with people saying there’s no chemistry between the leads, because with how Kevin Costner has talked about Whitney over the years, it makes sense for his character to be a little standoffish to her love. Its kinda mirroring what he probably felt in real life too, and I like that the love is told in a very delicate manner. The story had potential with this sick and twisted villain, which ends up being a cardboard cutout villain during the reveal. And again, this is a case just like Cape Fear where the Simpsons episode based on the movie is better than the film. This is pretty much an okay star vehicle film which is buoyed by the charm and charisma of the lead pair, the music, and just the general 90’s vibes which I oh so love. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/26/24 Full Review Devonnia MONESHA C 1point for getting the cast together Mr. Director and including the Best Actor of the film THE BODYGUARD "Kevin Costner" played this role Excellently. 0point for for the Main Actress Whitney Houston. She is a poor actress for signing up to this role and in addition the script is written very poorly because it deeply depicts women in a Negative light when it comes on to the Laws of Attraction between a man and a woman. HONESTLY this script must be unwritten from the World's History and this film The BODYGUARD must be Forgotten and NOT Remembered... It is offensive (Rachel a biblical name especially) and it Degrades women especially racially. I STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE so Permanently Delete It from Worlds History Thank you. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Carlos I It's a bit of a cheesy melodrama, but it's got enough crowd-pleasing moments along with a solid performance from Houston to make it a perfect Sunday afternoon movie. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/16/24 Full Review Zamya F It was incredible! The chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston is undeniable, and the soundtrack hits so hard that it's brilliant!
