Audience Member The film is clearly made for the Taiwan audience and needs to be adopted to make sense to the western audience. There are too many specific cultural references without which the movie loses it's character. I suppose speaking Chinese also helps so you don't have to read subtitles, as the visuals contains really subtle prompts - miss one and you miss the whole plot. You can easily turn this film into a little research project and probably will need to watch twice to make appreciate it all, otherwise you will end up really really confused. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review ernest e I couldn't follow all the pieces of the plot but this did not matter since just watching it is enough to be properly entertained. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Dive in to life of Taiwanese socialites in this complex crime drama. What's amusing is the family of Madam Tang, his daughter and granddaughter, are all women and have a gift in deceiving everyone in their quest for power and wealth. A women mafia if I might say. The number of subplots and crimes are way too many and complex that I couldnt keep up and feels like a blur. Overall, It's lovable crime tragedy. Elizabeth Kerr Hollywood Reporter The film tells an outrageously labyrinthine tale of power, corruption and lies pivoting on a ruthless matriarch and the daughters she is ostensibly gaining all her wealth for. Jan 5, 2018 Full Review Shikhar Verma High on Films While the acting is all fine across the board, the characters that seem unpredictable and dark end up being constantly mocked by their own very nature. Rated: 1.5/5 Oct 9, 2019 Full Review Zhuo-Ning Su The Film Stage this sumptuously produced, meticulously plotted and deliciously acted cautionary tale provides a riotous, fun time. Rated: B+ Aug 3, 2018 Full Review Andrew Blackie FILMINK (Australia) ...may be batshit crazy, but it does craziness elegantly Jul 12, 2018 Full Review Edmund Lee South China Morning Post [It] is ultimately more memorable for the chilling performances of its trio of actresses than for its story, which turns into a spectacle of family dysfunction and moral depravity. Rated: 3.5/5 Dec 7, 2017 Full Review David D'Arcy Screen International If the title promises a melodrama, this orgy of betrayal certainly is one; yet deft acting and sheer audacity take it beyond standard melodrama fare.
