Phil Hoad Guardian The shocks aren’t especially chilling, and the sense of claustrophobic entrapment in the milieu is undermined by a cop-out open ending. Rated: 3/5 Aug 7, 2023 Full Review Matt Donato Paste Magazine The basics are sound, but The Communion Girl’s ambitions are too redundantly straightforward—a serviceable-at-best rehash best suited for fresher-faced horror fans. Rated: 6.0/10 Aug 14, 2023 Full Review Casey Chong Fiction Horizon A familiar but effective Spanish-language ghost story. Rated: 7/10 Aug 11, 2023 Full Review Javier Ocaña El Pais (Spain) A horror film with great production value. But perhaps neglected the essentials: the story, the screenplay, and the denouement. [Full review in Spanish] Feb 10, 2023 Full Review Juan Pando Fotogramas ... offers the precise dose of fear to make it an ideal option even for those who are cautious towards horror films. Pinilla Cinemanía (Spain) An effective homeland terror that portrays a certain peripheral youth and that abounds in clichés and the urban legend. Claudio C La niña de la communion / The Communion Girl (2022) Flawed Screenplay, Awful Conclusion (11,913 – 14 Sep 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) In 1987, in Spain, the teenager Sara (Carla Campra) moves with her younger sister Judit (Olimpia Roch) and her parents to the countryside since they have found a job in the town. Sara is outcast by her schoolmates and befriends Rebeca “Rebe” (Aina Quiñones), who is also outcast. After the Judit’s First Communion, Sara and Rebe go to a party in a nearby town, where they drink and use drugs, On the return, they get a ride from two locals, and they see a girl wearing the outfit of first communion on the road and they stop the car. Sara finds a first communion doll, but no girl. Soon she experiences skin spots on her body and a dreadful trip, and she questions whether it is a side effect. But when her friends have the same experience, they realize that something supernatural is happening to them. “La niña de la communion”, a.k.a. “The Communion Girl” (2022), is a Spanish horror movie with a flawed screenplay and awful conclusion. The story has several subplots that go nowhere, but it is reasonable and startle the viewer in many moments. However, the conclusion destroys the movie, when supernatural things happen without any explanation, giving the idea that the budget ended or the writer was blocked. My vote is five. Title (Brazil): “A Primeira Comunhão” (“First Communion”) My Blog: https://maniacosporfilme.wordpress.com/ Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/25 Full Review Steve F Standard curse movie fare, think THE RING meets NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET.. But it is elevated by a likeable cast, empathetic characters, excellent film score, and a nice pace. The film took its time to establish the characters and their various relationships with side characters, when so many films like this just rush headlong from scare to scare to scare. Unfortunately, it's largely undone by its final scenes and none of those side characters really amount to anything. Even so, it's a very well-made film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Maja G He was very exciting and interesting to watch. The plot was well thought out and you always learn new things about the girl. It looks real and the characters gave good dynamics too. In all it's a great film, if a second comes along I would watch it too Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/22/24 Full Review Руслан Г давно не бачив такого поганого кіно. перші 30 хв нічого не відбувається- на жахи немає і натяку- вимкнув і перестав дивитися Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Adrian P I feel like it had potential, but the script, and some performances, were not good. another "horror" movie to the list of disappointments Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/25/23 Full Review Hugo S Spain, late 80's. After returning from a nightclub, two girls find an old doll wearing a communion dress. The event awakes the ghost of a local girl who disappeared under creepy circumstances. The ghost intends to take revenge on those whose intolerance and ignorance revealed to be fatal to her. "The Communion Girl" is boringly predictable and unoriginal. An ordinary execution of very ordinary ideas. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
