What to Know

Critics Consensus

Condensing Alexandre Dumas' hefty tome into a brisk and lavishly appointed action-adventure, this French adaptation of The Count of Monte-Cristo hits the sweet spot with rapier-like precision.

Christina Newland iNews.co.uk A refreshingly modern psychological take on the classic tale of love and revenge justifies its three-hour running time. Rated: 4/5 Sep 17, 2024 Full Review Linda Marric HeyUGuys A masterful adaptation that stands as one of the best renditions of Dumas' work to date. This is a visually stunning adaptation, which honours the original novel but also enhances it, offering a fresh and compelling take on a timeless tale. Rated: 5/5 Aug 30, 2024 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) There are obvious superhero echoes around this “origins” tale, and the film-makers are smart and confident enough to amplify them. Rated: 4/5 Aug 29, 2024 Full Review Gisela Savdie El Heraldo The script, the set design and the music contribute to captivate the audience from start to end, inviting us to reflect on timeless themes such as justice, revenge, betrayal, mercy, and patience. [Full review in Spanish] Nov 19, 2024 Full Review Paul Emmanuel Enicola The Movie Buff I found this version refreshing and inventive, even as I wished it had taken more time to immerse viewers in Dantès’ inner life. Yet, the film remains a satisfying experience and a worthy addition to the legacy of Monte Cristo adaptations. Rated: B+ Nov 12, 2024 Full Review Jack Martin Film Feeder The Count of Monte Cristo is a handsomely crafted new adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas story that crams a lot into its fast-paced three-hour runtime, yet at times it still feels a bit too rushed for its own good. acsdoug D I've never read Dumas' book so I don't know how closely the movie follows the source material. All I know is the film kept me engrossed for almost three hours. The sets, the dialogue, the acting, all superb. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Audience Member as a fan of the book, The Count of Monte Cristo felt like a bittersweet experience. the film takes significant liberties with key elements that, for me, gave the story its depth and characters their rich complexity. that said, it’s undeniably a good film, elevated by a talented cast who bring passion and life to the screen. for those unfamiliar with the original tale, it’s an engaging and entertaining ride—just don’t expect it to be faithful to the intricate masterpiece of the novel. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/16/24 Full Review Cath D Incredible. Nearly three hours of swashbuckling, double dealing, escapes, horse riding. fighting, story telling, revenge, love, loss. What a film!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/24 Full Review TK Y Epic. Tight script, great cinematography, sweeping soundtrack, amazing art direction and costumes...a nice throwback to the power of filmmaking. Like watching Bruce Wayne's ancestor...watch it to find out! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review StJohn O Excellent retelling of the classic, even though some poetic licence was taken with the story line. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
