It's a snowball, starts lightly fun, but at the end, you just cannot laugh at it. Interestingly, I watched it after "The Stranger", and it's impossible not to relate the judgment scenes on both movies. They share some physical similarities, but most importantly, both judgments are also stages to bring up important themes, well beyond the crimes and their opposite motivations. Ozon's adapted version of Camus' masterpiece bring us a deep and unsettling questioning of the value of a human life. Here, despite the whole comedy setting, Ozon makes a witty and timeless critic on the absurdness of the still prevalent gender bias, aggravated by the almost 90-year gap between the release and the fictitious 1935 setting.
