The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw compensates for a certain amount of frustrating narrative drift with solid performances and a strong command of mood.

Diamond W Easily one of the best movies about witchcraft ever released. The story of a young witch fully realizing her unique force and potential. Her frail, pixie-like beauty, juxtaposed against the rugged, pallid, rural landscape, effectively cloaks her emerging and devastating power of retribution. All those who would impede, manipulate or control her are consumed by despair or destroyed. Her acolytes are rewarded with fruitful abundance. It is the quintessence of witchcraft. The theme of "sacrifice" is explored thoroughly as it relates culture, family, and faith to subconscious ambition and desire, ultimately culminating in an horrendous sacrifice with equally horrifying results. The plot is concise and methodical with every action accounted for. The cinematography is loaded with artful composition and appropriately bleak atmosphere. The acting is convincing and engaging with what appear to be many skillful improvisations. The depictions of ritual and spell-casting are mesmerizing, haunting and sublime without the overly fantastical, effects-driven elements which can often reduce similar films to campy irrelevance. This earthy, spooky, mystical gem gets richer with each viewing. Awesome! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/23 Full Review John A Having read the "professional" critics, I can only assume they are enamoured of the director's new clothes. Despite good cinematography, acting and atmospherics it was a mish mash of events that had no coherence. They story is the main element. Bad acting, filming, etc can still make a cult classic, but this one will fade into obscurity. I cared about the mother and the husband but not the central character. Why? Because she was just nasty. No ultimate motive was clear, in fact, nothing was really clear. In the end, who cares. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/03/23 Full Review Audience Member A failure to lay even the most basic background resulted in what was at best a mediocre B-movie. Even the acting couldn't save this schizophrenic storyline. Looking at the comments from the critics I wonder did they even watch the movie? Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member It was so slow and pathetic. Boring Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review guillaume h Thightly constructed Folk Horror, a strange tale that mixes rigourous anachronistic christians and paganism, but in a way that feels out of time. This movie is not afraid to move along, the tale doesn thold back it's punches and it takes advantage of many different avenues, it is suprising how much happens in such a short time and how much it makes sense, because it trusts the watcher to keep up. It may be a very old story to the point of being a horror trope but it is definitely approached differently and with gusto. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Atmospheric and reminiscent of " The VVitch," although much more straightforward. There's a creeping dread, punctuated by moments of sudden violence. There's a theme of sacrifice and coming of age, sort of? The ending is ambiguous, and it suits the story. Overall a solid effort, with a very convincing performance by Jessica Reynolds as the title character. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Leslie Felperin Guardian As an exercise in world-building, this is pretty evocative and impressive stuff. Rated: 3/5 Nov 11, 2020 Full Review John DeFore Hollywood Reporter Hits some notes well but never really generates an overall sense of dread. Oct 2, 2020 Full Review Audrey Fox JumpCut Online The story of The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw is unapologetically slight, and there are a few moments where it seems to sacrifice a cohesive, tightly constructed narrative in favor of cultivating a sense of atmosphere. Aug 28, 2021 Full Review Jonathan DeHaan Nightmare on Film Street If the screenplay, the performances, and the direction of a film are the ingredients of a spell meant to bewitch the audience, The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw could have used double the toil and trouble to make that cauldron really burn and bubble. Rated: 6/10 Mar 1, 2021 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Canadian Folk horror about an outcast woman suspected of witchcraft and her daughter. Set in 1973, but doesn't look like it. Wonderful cast and atmosphere, but real issues with the writing. Rated: 3/5 Feb 13, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Ripe with tension and bloody practical special effects that should satisfy the genre lover but more than that it mines the very timely idea of isolation.
