The Davis family is going through some tough times in 1960: Laura and Frank have separated because after years of Frank’s unpredictable alcohol infused temper, Laura has taken action and thrown him out of the house. She has gone back to work as a nurse which her 11-year-old Ellen and 16-year-old Judy, don’t like any more than their dad does. To try to get Laura back, Frank gives her a beautiful antique necklace he finds in an old 1938 evidence bag at the station, and though Laura doesn't want to be "bought," Frank leaves the necklace at the house where Laura and the girls live. Unfortunately, the necklace is a conduit for the tormented soul of an evil boy from long ago, and Laura and her daughters find themselves in terrible danger from a little boy who no longer exists.

John Serba Decider This all adds up to something that’s PG-13-level tame, and not bad-bad enough to be unwatchable — it is boringly competent — or good-bad enough to be campy. Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

James A I enjoyed this movie mainly because of the quality of the acting and how likable the actors were. Other than Henry Thomas, I had never seen anyone in the cast before and I thought everyone did very good work. The scares were enjoyable. The story was interesting except for two problems, which I will get to below. A clever twist that hit about 2/3 of the way through honestly elevated the entire movie for me. By the end, with the exception of the two story problems that I’m about to get to, I thought it was a pretty solid creepy little thriller and I was glad that I stayed through the whole thing. Interestingly, the two-story problems were not about the supernatural elements, but rather about the real world aspects of the characters’ lives. I thought the reasons why the mother and father of the two girls that the movie is centered around separated was rather tempted and flimsy. I understand that many of the societal conditions of the 1960s — which is when the bulk of the movie is set — were very different and a married man may have been ashamed that his stay-at-home wife would want to get a job. But in this movie, such a minor marital squabble was elevated to home-wrecking, Shakespearian-tragedy dimensions, which felt a little silly. And the strange thing is that had the cause of the parent separation been something ordinary like the husband having an affair, then the story might have moved a little faster and worked it bit better. The other story weakness was the decision to introduce a spiritual medium — who had the power to conduct séances and alleviate a lot of suffering — about two thirds of the way through the movie. Considering that the family comes to trust this newcomer with their very lives, it just would’ve been a lot easier to believe had she been involved with them since the beginning, as maybe a housekeeper or a friendly neighbor or something. Those misgivings aside, this was a well-made and visually appealing film with wonderful performances, particularly by the two young leads, real-life sisters Madeleine and Violet McGraw, and Sarah Lind who played their their mother. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/19/24 Full Review Logan D Two young girls decide mommy was wrong to throw away daddy's present, a possessed necklace. Straightforward mostly dull horror film with a couple of inspired scenes of horror. The two girls are played by real life sisters who, along with their mother, were executive producers on the film. Guess no one wanted to step on their toes and instruct them how to properly produce a film. Not recommended. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/12/24 Full Review Jm M Great horror movie 🎥 in October / November 2024 !!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Mike G The production design is so bad that I honestly can't even tell what year they're depicting, because it certainly isn't 1960. It seems to be set somewhere between '68 to '71. There's a scene where a character opens a fridge and clearly removes a modern soda can. With the exception of the 16 year old daughter, almost all of the costumes are an anachronism and it took me right out of the movie. The actors have a thankless job. They can act, but most of the direction doesn't make any sense. Sometimes their dialogue and actions are bizarre, so the script isn't helping. At least the film looks cinematic. I'm guessing the budget was less than 5 million. I recognize 4 of the leads from other films; the dad, the "medium," and the 2 daughters. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/30/24 Full Review Tina M Could have been good if not filmed in darko vision. Why is it horror films always have to be filmed in the dark. With technology, it can be filmed in the light and then use CGI to mark it dark. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
