The Devotion of Suspect X movie review
By Catherine Wu
Background:
The story is based on the awarding novel by Japanese author Keigo Higashino. Both the novel and the movie shares the same name. This is the 3rd version of the novel, after the Japanese & Korean version.
This movie is second movie for the director Alec Su. Keigo Higashino(the author) requesting the Chinese adaptation must be different than the Japanese's and Korean's due to the copyright.
All 3 casts are very experienced in the industry. This is the 1st movie for Wang Kai (Professor Tang)as major male character. Last movie, he was one of the main characters in Jacky Chan's movie (Railroad Tigers) in Christmas 2016. With the director's experience, there are total of over 50 years of acting experience between them.
Cast:
Tang Chung (Wang Kai),assistant physicist professor in university & police consultant. Very confident, high self esteem, believe justice is most important thing
Chen Jing (Ruby Lin), cashier of a local restaurant, lives with daughter (Chen Xiao Xin)
Shi Hong (Zhang Luyi),mathematician ,over qualify junior high school teacher, neighbor of Chen Jing, long lost friend of Tang Chung, antisocial personality disorder
Plot:
Without reading the book, I am not sure what is the difference between the book and the movie. The director used the first 10 min to introduce all casts and their characteristic. Then the movie starts to unfold with a murder case where Chen Jing is a suspicion. When Tang Chung realize his friend Shi Hong might involved in the case, it turned into a emotional and psychological battle. He always thinks he understand Shi Hong, but he under-estimate what love can do to a person.
Music:
More than the script and the acting, the director use the background music to express the atmosphere and enhance the visual, for example, the use of the metronome represent the end of the life of the ex-husband and the oboe practice represent all character's life back to normal and the incident had changed Shi Hong's life.
Props:
The director had been a top notch using props to make the storyline as realistic as possible, for example, stickers on the door, blackboard with math solutions, office desk with physics books. The directional acoustic generator and the rope both appears 3 times through out the movie, all of these show the detailedness and thoughtfulness of the director.
Overlook scenes:
1. badminton playing: it represent the whole situation is both a physical and emotional competition between 2 of them
2. the leaf going down the river: Shi Hong is the leaf and the rive is life. At once he was stuck in the current, but after he met Chen Jing, it added meaning to his life.
Subtitle:
It is pretty good matching up with the Mandarin script. Other than the first 5 min or so, the rest of the movie is on a reasonable pace, so the subtitle is steady. The first 5 min mostly is the script from Professor Tang, when he knows his topic and very confident, he speaks quite fast.
One minor issue will be catching the casts' micro-expression while reading the subtitle. Due to this movie is more focus on emotional changes, a lot of casts' emotional is on their face and through their eyes. While reading the subtitle, may not giving the best chance to observe the presented emotional expression.
Deeper meaning:
- "Life is just like drinking tea, it will just be bitter for a while, it wont be bitter for life."
- Issues or problems is not looking as simple as it looks, there is always different side of the story.
Overall:
I will give 4-1/2 to 5 stars to this movie due to the detailedness & thoughtfulness of the director and of course, the acting & all the micro-expression of the casts.
I am not sure how long this movie will be in theater, but please do so in the coming week if you are interested.
