TIME Staff TIME Magazine The Divine Woman is another vehicle for the extraordinarily tempestuous passions of Actress Greta Garbo. Sep 18, 2020 Full Review Mordaunt Hall New York Times Greta Garbo's latest picture, The Divine Woman, has some well-staged scenes, but it is more often than not weakened by an absence of spontaneity and also because of a tendency toward hysteria in the more emotional sequences. Jul 19, 2020 Full Review Jack Lait Variety There is considerable comedy besides the hefty emotionalism at the critical turns of the action. The photography is perfect and the scenic ambitions seem directed at realism rather than magnificence. Jul 19, 2020 Full Review Film Daily Staff The Film Daily Seastrom's handling of it does make it fairly interesting but seldom truly absorbing. Sep 18, 2020 Full Review Shadow Stage Photoplay [It's] well worth your while to see this production. Sep 18, 2020 Full Review H.L. Danson Brooklyn Daily Eagle One or two flashes of good contrast throughout the picture showed the direction of Victor Seastrom, but generally The Divine Woman is anything but that. Lorenz L All known extant prints of "The Divine Woman" were destroyed in an MGM warehouse fire in the 1960s. It is officially regarded as a "lost film". Only one reel is known to exist, with a running-time of approximately eight minutes. It can be found as a bonus feature on a DVD set of Greta Garbo silent films. The press reviews published by Rotten Tomatoes can only be from the original 1928 release of the film. I have seen the eight minute fragment, and there is certainly not enough to grasp the story of the complete film or its characters (production stills, lobby cards, and a script and/or synopsis still exist). Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It is hard to judge a film only by seeing 9 minutes (this is the duration of the surviving copy of Sjöström's romance) but "The Divine Woman" seemed to have a lot of potential to become a great romantic film, or at least an interesting, well-acted one.
