Audience Member I came across this film by accident, when looking up the abuse of young children by the Nazis. It's a very simple story: a group of teenagers rescue a wanted prisoner; the Gestapo are out to find him, and soon discover where he is hiding. This puts the whole group in mortal danger. Karl, the protagonist, has to make an extremely difficult decision about the prisoner's fate and the choice he makes lifts this film from budget indie into a true reckoning with history. There have been some reviews of this, mainly negative. The principle charge being that it's one-note and the camera work isn't great. But the story is incredible. For all the reasons we can imagine, tales of resistance to the Nazis don't get as much traction as tales about the allied forces, and the main narrative is about the holocaust. Yet this shows that there was organised resistance from within and without - that kids who could have saved their own lives opted to resist in a bid to save others. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Have you ever heard of the Edelweiss Pirates? This film is based on them; a group of anti-Nazi teenagers opposed to Nazism and bitter enemies of the Hitler Youth. In November 1944 13 members of the Ehrenfeld Group (including six teenaged Edelweiss Pirates) were hung in public - the film centres around the events leading up to the hanging, and the people (some fictional, some not) who were involved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Me gustó bastante , una pelicula poco convencional, en la que el bueno no es tan bueno en un medio en el que es imposible ser completamente heroe sin perder la vida. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a pretty much unseen classic really. Set in the ruins of 1944 Cologne as the war trawls to an end, a band of friends in an anti-Nazi movement fight pitched battles with the Hitler Youth and act quite harmlessly rebellious in the main. This changes when they rescue a bomb defuse expert being held as prisoner. The plot moves along to more risky projects such as stealing butter and plotting to blow up the Gestapo Offices. They are soon captured and all of them ruthlessly put to death after torture. The film is show through a 3rd person perspective, so always gives you the 'feel' that you're in amongst them. The attention to detail is remarkable too, which actually gives you the impression that it's a high budget film when it clearly isn't. The central part of the story focuses on two brothers who are on opposite sides of the struggle. It's pretty remarkable to see that even under huge oppression that the Nazi's had Germany under, even kids would fight, and die opposing it. A really great watch.
