One of the most powerful war movies ever made. This is an homage to the bravery honor and the sacrifice that makes a soldier. The sacred cause that motivates a person to fight kill and die selflessly. If you understand this cost you will appreciate your life and your freedom.

Highly recommended. Aside from being a top-notch war movie with high production value, realism and beautiful visuals, the movie is groundbreaking in being perhaps the first Chinese-produced war movie to candidly portray the nationalist army - the good and the bad - and examine the deep divides and contrasts in China's early struggle to self-identify as a nation state. This is at times conveyed heavy-handedly, with obvious contrasts drawn between the international concessions and the Chinese sovereign territories; but it also manifests in more subtle ways, shown through the childhood tunes hummed by the soldiers and township mementos they carry. All in all, a surprisingly honest and self-searching look at the birth of the modern Chinese state disguised as a well-rounded war film.

Any human must witness the history. This chapter is unforgetable and shall forever be remembered. I wholeheartedly saluted the director and actors for their outstanding performances. The picture is beautiful, battle is realistic and sound effect is great. I love this movie. It made me tear and cries more than i could imagine. Please share it out and support this movie !!!
