Thomas C. Kennedy Motography The romance is interesting and gives more strength to the scenes of fire and flood. The players are well suited to their roles and each carries the spectator's sympathy... The exterior scenes showing the comet in the sky are indeed remarkable. Ben D Perhaps the first end of the world disaster movie, this Danish production made in the middle of the First World War is a clever little parable of a movie. It shows how people will exploit impending tragedy for profit, and how relationships formed in the shadow of apocalypse can survive the darkest hour and become light. For such an early cinematic effort, the effects are pretty decent. Fireballs of death rain down on villages as the comet comes closer (and the comet cannot help but remind viewers of Hailey's Comet that had passed by just a few years earlier and bought with it thoughts of the end time) - and the viewer is also reminded of the fighting ravaging Europe, and of the displacement of thousands of people by an event out of their control. There is a village flooded by seawater, and people clinging to rooftops. For 1916, this is sophisticated stuff - but one can't help but think how would this look if made by UEFA just ten years later. Imagine this as told by Murnau or Lang. The film was restored by the Danish Film Institute in 2006 and looks incredible for a film that is getting close to 100 years old.
