But when an old friend, Terry Rose (Cosmo Jarvis, LADY MACBETH), returns with dangerous new plans that threaten the fragile balance Cole has crafted amidst the addiction, economic stress and environmental devastation that have his declining mining town in a stranglehold, his world and identity are thrown into deep disarray. Life is pushed even further out of balance by the sudden homecoming of Cole's estranged mother, Ruby (Lili Taylor, THE CONJURING), increasing conflict with the region's true drug dealer, Everett (Marc Menchaca, OZARK, THE OUTSIDER) and shifting relationships with two local women: Charlotte (Stacy Martin, NYMPHOMANIAC) and Lacy (Kerry Bishé, ARGO). Faced with an impossible set of choices and intensifying pressure from all sides, Cole soon decides that he has to take action to save the tight-knit fabric of family, friendship, land and history that binds everything and everyone he loves. greg r I watched this movie over two hours and never figured out what it was really about. That's not okay. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review lois h This is a real story about people, struggles, life, relationships, and dope. Set in the backdrop of what could be earthy West Virginia, we're taken right into the mildewed-smelling homes of a different culture. I think this is a rich film. The dope-trading heroes and demons are in a battle for the substrate of small, deep America. The acting is superb, but credit must be given to Cosmo Jarvis who seems to crawl right into a persona and delivers it completely. See this film. Carlos Aguilar Los Angeles Times King's touching, if muddled, drama succeeds at dignifying a subset of this country's working class. Aug 5, 2021 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com The Evening Hour falls back on clichés, telling its story with a palpable sense of distance from the characters, from their struggles, and from the world they inhabit. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 30, 2021 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times The movie opens and closes with appreciative pans of the verdant hills that suggest the heartland will live on. But what comes in the middle doesn't quite hold together. Jul 29, 2021 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture The landscapes establish a sufficient mood, but one also finds it difficult to become completely engulfed in the storytelling by the visual aesthetics alone. Rated: 4/10 Jun 5, 2022 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity Lingering... rural elegy... As with King's documentary work and his first fiction feature, "Here" (2011), the stately glimpse of place and space express as much yearning as the most disappointed yet hopeful human heart... Rated: 8/10 Aug 26, 2021 Full Review Leo Brady AMovieGuy.com There is potential from director Braden King and the entire cast is game to take on their roles, but it all just doesn't come together.
