Overall, the good balances with the bad. There is enough going on visually that is genuinely interesting and creepy that you can overlook the sins of its storytelling. Go to Full Review

This film left me speechless and it really is something you just have to experience yourself. Go to Full Review

A stream-of-consciousness nightmare that would never have existed were it not for the confluence of money, mental illness, and fanatical devotion to vision. Go to Full Review

The Evil Within is far from flawless, but it's hard to argue with Getty's devotion to this singularly distinguished work of art. Go to Full Review

The fantastical landscape of the film is also forgiving of its flaws, as any shortcomings in the script or direction simply feed into the sense of things being not as they should be. Go to Full Review

[It] will not be for everyone, and as the years pass it's likely that the story of its prolonged production and tortured creator will become better known than the film itself, but one thing you can say for sure ... Getty has left his mark upon the world. Go to Full Review

Oaklee D @ODie63 Jun 25 Visually a treat, story wise leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately a case of style over substance. See more g j May 18 Undeniably flawed, but delightfully deranged. Some genuinely visionary camerawork and set pieces and a uniquely unsettling tone. See more Corporal L Jan 2 An absolute must-see 'labour of love'. 'The Evil Within' is a testament to Andrew Getty's perseverance, creativity and passion for storytelling. A project that reflects and highlights his troubled past before his untimely demise. You can really see the passion in the set design, writing and cast. I still find it maddening that he dropped a significant portion of his inheritance to fulfil this vision. Creating custom sets, the immaculate attention to detail and re-shooting scene after scene to be exactly how he wanted it. No corners were cut. As eccentric as he was towards the making of this film, I really wish he could have seen the final product. Please bear in mind that production and filming began in 2004, stopped in 2008 before it's eventual release in 2017. Many years of post-production, minor reshoots and a lack of back-and-forth with Getty himself. There are some continuity errors like film quality, minor age/appearance changes but, for myself, it didn't break the immersion. See more Ronald M 06/03/2024 I usually describe this movie as an amazing build up to disappointment. They had some issues hen making this movie so the ending is just bad. But the beginning is phenomenal, and the buildup to the middle Amazing. The main character (Frederick Koehler) carries the movie perfectly and they made great use of Michael Berryman. It is worth the watch for the beginning and middle, and I've even shown just those parts to a couple people. See more Logan D 11/19/2023 A mentally disabled youth is provoked to do harm by a demonic reflection. A singular vision based on the nightmares Getty had as a child. Filming began in 2002 and the film wasn't completed until 2017, two years after Getty's death. The film has many flaws but perhaps we can forgive them with the illnesses of two of the cast members, McGrory and Berryman, as well as the sickness of Getty himself. The film was finished by his editor. I will say that I still loved the film, however, despite it's flaws. The opening is a remarkably intense set piece and the finale a Grand Guignol garnering my highest respect. The bulk of the rest of the film is carried by Koehler, who manages to portray Dennis as a sympathetic and realistic mentally handicapped man who happens to be haunted by a Gollum like other self. The film falls flat whenever he isn't on screen, focusing mainly on the relationship of Dennis' brother and his fiancé. If you want something different and willing to forgive flaws, recommended. Last appearance of McGrory. His scenes were filmed in 2005. See more Wolfgang G 08/28/2023 The Evil Within ist ein Horrorfilm von Andrew Getty… See more Read all reviews
