      Critics Consensus

The Face of an Angel finds director Michael Winterbottom in pursuit of ideas that remain frustratingly diffuse and agonizingly out of his grasp.

steve d instantly forgettable despite a good cast. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Documentaries seriously boo Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/18 Full Review Audience Member It really didn't take off. All looking at Face of an Angel made we want to do was reread The Divine Comedy - the film itself is a complete turkey. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review farah r There's a gripping murder mystery and the movie should have focused on that instead of the jumbled nonsense of the character's personal affairs. There are details and events that bring up plenty of questions as to who the killer was and how the murder happened but by the end, there are no real answers and it's very frustrating. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member The story is interesting. I basically watched it because of Cara Delevingne's involvement in the film. But I couldn't get my full attention on the movie so yep. It is boring. Dull. And not those movies that you'll want to watch on speakers because it gets quiet for a moment because of the characters talking and next thing, you are panicking because there are moans rightafter. Bad scene transitions there. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Ranks among Worst Movies Ever! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times Occasionally Winterbottom delivers a haunting, effective moment, giving a hint of a different, more compelling film. But then it's back to the self-righteous, self-indulgent, muddled metaphors. Rated: 2/4 Aug 14, 2015 Full Review Bilge Ebiri New York Magazine/Vulture The film does occasionally show a pulse when it tries to re-imagine the life of the victim - when it turns the tables on the mystery and tries to become a film about love and life, instead of doom and death. But it's too little, too late, and too lame. Jun 20, 2015 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com To get at the heart of what's wrong with "The Face of an Angel" all you need to do is consider the professional stones it takes to adapt the Amanda Knox case into yet another movie about the existential/amorous crises of a white male filmmaker. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 19, 2015 Full Review Angus Batey NME (New Musical Express) An approach that avoids the cliches of whodunnits and the legal minefield of writing about an ongoing court case, instead meditating on love, loss and the subjective nature of truth. Rated: 4/5 May 18, 2021 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site We always remain on or near the impressionistic, journalistic surface. Feb 26, 2021 Full Review Di Golding Dear Cast and Crew This wannabe sexy thriller takes itself so seriously that it's almost a comedy. Almost. Rated: 2/5 Dec 10, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
