Audience Member Chaplin is at an early and raw stage here in this story of a painter who seeks refuge in alcohol when his girl leaves him for a millionaire. Though the foundations of his unique brand of comedy and drama storytelling can be seen, this is hardly as rewarding as his later works. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Charlie paints! This must be one of the first of Chaplin's films to contain some pathos, Charlie's artist being quite a tragic character, who loses his love to a rich man. The scene in which a drunken Charlie draws a hole on the bar room floor and then proceeds to try and jump in it is one of my favourite bits of any of his very early films. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member On the one hand, The Face on the Bar Room Floor is a rather different Chaplin film than you might expect with a different style than his other films, but on the other hand, it's far too technically messy to appreciate. I had trouble understanding the story and what was going on. I'm not sure if I just had a bad copy of the film with no intertitles, but I couldn't follow the story at all. There are a couple or so pretty funny gags, but the entire film isn't all that funny and is rather disappointing. The story is actually fairly good, but I had to read it from a synopsis to understand it. Charlie is so much better than this. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Another 1914 Chaplin-short. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member This is best appreciated for its narrative inventiveness, as a drunken Charlie appears to be recounting for his barmates his former life as an important artist. The nice blend of tragic-comedy never works as well as it should, but I can appreciate this early attempt of Chaplin to get at what would become second-nature to him later. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Good prat falls, but pretty weak sauce over all Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
